Mount Meru Hiking

Rising to 4,566 metres above sea level, Mount Meru offers one of Tanzania’s most rewarding mountain experiences. Located within Arusha National Park, the mountain takes you from lush montane forests and open moorlands to dramatic volcanic landscapes, with changing scenery at every stage of the climb. The journey begins through the forested lower slopes, where you may encounter wildlife and hear the calls of birds before continuing towards the higher reaches of the mountain. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and open, revealing spectacular views of the surrounding plains and, on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. The final ascent towards Socialist Peak brings a true sense of achievement as you stand above the clouds on Mount Meru's summit. Mount Meru is ideal for travellers looking for a challenging but deeply rewarding adventure before or after a safari, or as preparation for Mount Kilimanjaro. With its dramatic landscapes, volcanic character, wildlife, and quieter trails, the mountain offers an experience that feels both adventurous and personal.

PLAN YOUR MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE

Best Time to Hike in Tanzania

Tanzania offers hiking opportunities throughout the year, but the best time depends on your chosen mountain and trail. The drier seasons, from January to early March and June to October, are generally popular for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, with better chances of clearer skies and beautiful mountain views. The wetter months bring greener landscapes but can mean muddy trails, rain, and reduced visibility. Whether you are planning a challenging summit climb or a scenic day hike, choosing the right season can make your adventure more enjoyable.

Food is an important part of the Arusha Villa experience. Breakfast is prepared with fresh fruit, eggs and freshly baked bread, while lunch and dinner can feature vegetables grown from the property’s own garden alongside carefully prepared local and international dishes. Guests can relax around the swimming pool, enjoy the garden, or spend an evening on the terrace beneath the stars, surrounded by the sounds of birds and the occasional movement of monkeys through the trees.

Arusha

Arusha Serena Hotel

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Meru beside the tranquil waters of Lake Duluti, Arusha Serena Hotel offers a graceful escape surrounded by gardens, forest and the quiet beauty of northern Tanzania. The hotel offers 42 charming stone cottages arranged around a central village square, creating an intimate and relaxed atmosphere. Inspired by the character of a 1920s lakeside retreat, the rooms feature warm interiors, leaded windows, French doors and private views across the gardens or Lake Duluti. King, twin and triple configurations, together with connecting family rooms, make the property equally welcoming for couples, families and small groups.

Life at Arusha Serena is unhurried and beautifully connected to its surroundings. Guests can retreat to the cosy library, relax in the lounge, enjoy the gardens or gather beside the restaurant’s crackling fireplace. Dining combines Tanzanian flavours with international cuisine, while special experiences such as breakfast beside Lake Duluti and sundowners overlooking the water transform simple moments into lasting memories.

Everything You Need to Know

Frequently Asked Questions About Hiking in Tanzania

Planning a mountain adventure comes with many questions, from choosing the right route to preparing for the climb. Find helpful answers about hiking to help you plan your next hiking expedition to Tanzania.

The best time to climb is generally during the drier seasons, from January to early March and June to October. These months often offer better trail conditions and clearer views, although weather in the mountains can change at any time.

Most Mount Kilimanjaro climbs take between 5 and 9 days on the mountain, depending on the route. Longer itineraries generally allow more time for acclimatisation, which can improve your chances of reaching the summit safely.

Both mountains can be suitable for beginners with proper preparation. Mount Meru is a shorter but challenging trek and can be a good introduction to high-altitude hiking. Kilimanjaro offers several routes and requires more time and preparation to reach its summit.

You should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours a day over consecutive days. Regular hiking, walking, stair climbing, and cardio training can help you prepare. You do not need to be an elite athlete, but good preparation is important.

Essential items include sturdy hiking boots, warm layered clothing, a waterproof jacket and trousers, a warm hat and gloves, a daypack, a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and a headlamp. For high-altitude climbs, suitable cold-weather gear is especially important because temperatures can drop significantly near the summit.

A typical hiking package includes park fees, professional mountain guides, porters, meals during the trek, drinking water, camping equipment or mountain huts depending on the route, and transfers as specified in your itinerary. Packages may also include airport transfers and hotel accommodation before or after the climb. Inclusions vary by route and package, so check your itinerary carefully to understand what is covered and what you need to arrange separately.

The cost of hiking in Tanzania depends on the mountain, duration, and services included. Mount Kilimanjaro is generally more expensive, while Mount Meru, Ol Doinyo Lengai, and the Usambara Mountains offer other hiking options that may be more affordable. Kilimanjaro Hiking – 8 Days Northern Circuit

For travellers who want to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its most familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers a remarkable journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. Beginning on the western side, the route passes through lush rainforest and across the expansive Shira Plateau before reaching remote valleys beneath the rugged Lent Hills. As the landscape changes from dense forest to open moorland and high alpine desert, the mountain reveals new perspectives at every stage. The northern traverse is especially rewarding, offering expansive views towards Kenya, dramatic volcanic scenery and a sense of solitude that makes this route distinct from the busier approaches.

The journey gradually leads towards the eastern side of Kibo before turning towards the summit. With several days spent exploring different elevations and landscapes, the Northern Circuit provides valuable opportunities for acclimatisation, although altitude sickness remains a risk and summit success is never guaranteed. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak is demanding, requiring patience, determination and careful guidance from your mountain team. After the summit attempt, descend through the southern slopes to Mweka Camp and continue to the park gate the following day. Back to Eden Adventure takes care of the arrangements so you can concentrate on the experience, the changing scenery and the extraordinary achievement of climbing Africa’s highest mountain.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 9 Days Northern Circuit

For those who wish to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers an extraordinary journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. The adventure begins in the western rainforest before climbing onto the vast Shira Plateau, where open moorland and volcanic landscapes reveal sweeping views of Kibo. From there, the trail leaves the more frequently travelled routes behind and follows the remote northern side of the mountain, passing beneath the Lent Hills and across high-altitude terrain with distant views towards Kenya. Each stage reveals a different character of Kilimanjaro, making this route especially rewarding for travellers who value solitude, varied scenery and a more gradual approach to the summit.

With nine days on the mountain, the itinerary allows more time to experience the changing elevations and prepare for the final ascent. The journey passes through alpine desert towards School Hut, where the summit attempt begins during the night. Reaching Uhuru Peak requires endurance, careful pacing and attention to altitude, but standing at 5,895 metres offers a remarkable opportunity to appreciate the scale of Africa’s highest mountain. After the summit attempt, descend towards Millennium Camp before continuing to the park gate. Back to Eden Adventure coordinates the arrangements throughout the journey, allowing you to focus on the mountain, the experience and the achievement of travelling across one of Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive routes.
