Journey Overview

Mount Kilimanjaro rises above northern Tanzania, its snow-capped summit standing as one of Africa’s most recognisable natural landmarks. The Marangu Route, often known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” follows a well-established trail through several distinct mountain environments, from lush rainforest to open moorland and the stark alpine desert beneath Kibo Peak. Unlike routes that rely on mountain tents, Marangu offers overnight accommodation in permanent mountain huts, making it a distinctive way to experience the climb.

This five-day mountain itinerary takes you from Marangu Gate through Mandara Hut and Horombo Hut before crossing the high-altitude saddle to Kibo Hut. The summit attempt begins in the early hours, leading towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres. After reaching the summit, you descend to Horombo Hut before completing the trek at Marangu Gate. This shorter itinerary moves quickly to higher elevations and does not include a dedicated acclimatization day, making it particularly demanding. With careful preparation, experienced mountain guides and a willingness to follow their safety advice, you can take on this remarkable challenge with Back to Eden Adventure.

Getting Ready for the Roof of Africa

Today is dedicated to preparing for your Kilimanjaro climb. You will meet your mountain guide for a briefing about the Marangu Route, the daily hiking schedule, altitude awareness and essential safety procedures. Your guide will inspect your hiking boots, waterproof clothing, warm layers and other essential equipment to ensure you are prepared for the changing conditions on the mountain. Any missing items can be discussed and hired if available.

This preparation day gives you time to ask questions, organise your belongings and become familiar with the plan before entering the national park. Your guide will explain the importance of walking slowly, staying hydrated, eating regularly and reporting any unusual symptoms during the trek. After completing the briefing and equipment check, return to your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening. Tomorrow, your journey begins beneath Kilimanjaro’s forest canopy.

Day 2: Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut

The Forest Trail into Kilimanjaro

Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking time: 3–5 hours
Altitude: Marangu Gate, approximately 1,860 m → Mandara Hut, approximately 2,700 m
Habitat: Montane rainforest

After breakfast, travel from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where your guide completes park registration and the mountain crew prepares the equipment. Once the formalities are complete, begin hiking along a forest trail that winds through Kilimanjaro’s lush lower slopes. Tall trees, ferns, moss-covered branches and the sounds of forest birds create a peaceful atmosphere, while the shaded path offers a gentle introduction to the climb. Look out for blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys in the canopy, and take care on muddy or slippery sections, particularly after rain.

Continue uphill towards Mandara Hut, where you will spend your first night on the mountain. Surrounded by rainforest, the hut area provides a sheltered place to rest after the day’s walk. If time, weather and your guide’s advice permit, you may take a short excursion towards Maundi Crater for views of the surrounding landscape. After settling in, enjoy your evening meal, drink regularly and rest well. Tomorrow, the trail gradually leaves the dense forest behind as you climb towards Kilimanjaro’s open highlands.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 3: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut

Beyond the Forest into the Highlands

Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Altitude: Mandara Hut, approximately 2,700 m → Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m
Habitat: Heathland and moorland

After breakfast, leave Mandara Hut and continue upward as the trail transitions from the rainforest into heathland and open moorland. The scenery becomes increasingly expansive, with giant heathers, distinctive high-altitude plants and wide views across Kilimanjaro’s slopes. As the trees become less frequent, the dramatic outlines of Mawenzi and Kibo may emerge in the distance. The changing vegetation and cooler mountain air mark an important transition as you move into a higher and more exposed environment.

Continue towards Horombo Hut, following a steady pace with regular breaks along the way. Your guide will monitor how you respond to the increasing altitude and encourage you to walk slowly rather than rush the ascent. On arrival, settle into the mountain huts and enjoy views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Horombo is an important overnight stop on the Marangu Route, and you will remain here for an additional acclimatization day before continuing towards Kibo Hut.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 4: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut

Across the Saddle Beneath Kibo

Distance: Approximately 9–10 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Altitude: Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m → Kibo Hut, approximately 4,700 m
Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, leave Horombo Hut and continue towards the broad saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail crosses an increasingly barren landscape where the lush vegetation of the lower mountain gives way to rocky ground, dry soil and sparse alpine plants. With fewer trees and little shade, the surroundings feel open and remote. As Kibo grows larger ahead, the scale of the mountain becomes more apparent, reminding you that the summit attempt is approaching.

Continue steadily towards Kibo Hut, taking regular breaks and following your guide’s pace as the altitude increases. Upon arrival, settle into the mountain accommodation and prepare for the demanding night ahead. Your guide will review the summit plan and check that your warm clothing, headlamp, gloves, water and other essential equipment are ready. Eat an early meal and try to rest before the midnight start. The next stage will require patience, determination and careful attention to how your body feels at high altitude.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 5: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

The Final Ascent to Africa's Highest Point

Distance: Approximately 6 km ascent, followed by around 15 km of descent
Hiking time: Approximately 6–8 hours to the summit, followed by 4–6 hours or more descending to Horombo Hut
Altitude: Kibo Hut, approximately 4,700 m → Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m → Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m
Habitat: Alpine desert, arctic summit zone and moorland

The summit attempt usually begins around midnight, when you leave Kibo Hut beneath a sky filled with stars. Guided by your mountain team, you will climb slowly over steep, loose volcanic terrain towards Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. Cold temperatures, darkness and reduced oxygen make this the most demanding stage of the climb, so maintaining a steady pace is essential. From the crater rim, continue towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres above sea level. Your guide will monitor the group’s condition throughout the ascent and prioritise safety over reaching the summit.

If conditions and your physical wellbeing allow you to reach Uhuru Peak, take time to appreciate the remarkable achievement and capture photographs of the summit landscape. The early morning light may reveal the glaciers, crater surroundings and distant views beyond the mountain. After celebrating, begin the long descent towards Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night. This is an exceptionally strenuous day, and summit success cannot be guaranteed. If altitude symptoms or other safety concerns arise, your guide may change the plan or turn back to protect your wellbeing.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Moshi

The Journey Back Through the Mountain Forest

Distance: Approximately 20 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Altitude: Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m → Marangu Gate, approximately 1,860 m
Habitat: Moorland, heathland and montane rainforest

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, begin the final descent along the Marangu Route. The trail leads through open moorland and heathland before gradually returning to the greener slopes below. As you lose altitude, the vegetation becomes denser and the air grows warmer, bringing you back through landscapes that contrast with the dry, exposed terrain near the summit. Although the descent is less demanding on your breathing, the long walk can be tiring after the summit attempt, so take care with your footing and follow your guide’s pace.

Continue downhill towards Marangu Gate, where your team completes the park formalities and eligible climbers can receive their summit certificates according to the altitude they reached. Take a moment to appreciate the mountain guides and crew who supported you throughout the climb. Your driver will meet you at the gate and transfer you back to Moshi, where a hot shower, a comfortable bed and time to relax await. The mountain journey is complete, leaving you with memories of Kilimanjaro’s remarkable landscapes and the challenge you undertook.

Questions Before You Go

Every journey with Back to Eden Adventures is thoughtfully designed around your interests, pace, and sense of adventure. Here you’ll find answers to the questions our guests often ask about planning, accommodation, activities, logistics, and what to expect along the way. If there’s anything you’re still wondering about, our team is always here to help you plan your journey with confidence.

You are expected to carry your own day pack, with only things which should be able to sustain you until you reach the next camp at the end of the day. You do not need to carry your personal backpack/ duffel pack – It will be carried by our porters.
No worries about that – this is a common concern. It is much better for your body if you proceed slowly and guides will permanently remind you about this (“pole-pole” – which means “slowly slowly”). By walking slowly, your body will much better acclimatize to high altitude. There is plenty of time allocated each day for the treks, even for those who like to go very slowly.
Some climbers may fall short of reaching the summit, but not at the expense of their overall experience. Even for those who never reached the top, the experience of the wonders of Kilimanjaro is very rewarding. If one or more members of the group decide they cannot continue, or if a guide deems it unsafe for an individual (or a group) to continue, they are escorted to the most convenient campsite or Hut. Our guides intimately know the network of shortcuts to escort climbers to safety, and they are trained to act quickly and calmly under any circumstance.
On the Marangu Route, there are simple basic Huts. The first 2 Huts sleep four people each and the last Hut is a dome-style with bunk beds. On all the other routes, you will sleep in 3 dome-style Tents, two people each. The Tents are modern and have an outer flysheet and large vestibules to keep equipment from the elements. They are set up, broken down, and carried- along with everything else- by our porters. There are public toilets set up at every campsite, but portable toilets are available upon request at the cost of $ 100 per group for the whole tour. Hot water is provided for each person every morning but No showers during the trek There will be dining tents with chairs and tables where all meals will be served. Before any meal, we will provide soap and hot water for washing your hands.
For each trek on the Mount a dedicated cook will be part of the logistical team. They are professional chefs and can prepare different kinds of dishes. Please see a sample page for Dietary Menu.
You shouldn’t worry- You are in safe hands. Our guides are professionally trained to handle all sorts of distress and respond quickly and accordingly. They all have Wilderness First Aid Responder qualification and they will all time bring you to safety. They will directly call for an emergency evacuation if the situation worsens.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 9 Days Northern Circuit

For those who wish to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers an extraordinary journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. The adventure begins in the western rainforest before climbing onto the vast Shira Plateau, where open moorland and volcanic landscapes reveal sweeping views of Kibo. From there, the trail leaves the more frequently travelled routes behind and follows the remote northern side of the mountain, passing beneath the Lent Hills and across high-altitude terrain with distant views towards Kenya. Each stage reveals a different character of Kilimanjaro, making this route especially rewarding for travellers who value solitude, varied scenery and a more gradual approach to the summit.

With nine days on the mountain, the itinerary allows more time to experience the changing elevations and prepare for the final ascent. The journey passes through alpine desert towards School Hut, where the summit attempt begins during the night. Reaching Uhuru Peak requires endurance, careful pacing and attention to altitude, but standing at 5,895 metres offers a remarkable opportunity to appreciate the scale of Africa’s highest mountain. After the summit attempt, descend towards Millennium Camp before continuing to the park gate. Back to Eden Adventure coordinates the arrangements throughout the journey, allowing you to focus on the mountain, the experience and the achievement of travelling across one of Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive routes.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 8 Days Northern Circuit

For travellers who want to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its most familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers a remarkable journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. Beginning on the western side, the route passes through lush rainforest and across the expansive Shira Plateau before reaching remote valleys beneath the rugged Lent Hills. As the landscape changes from dense forest to open moorland and high alpine desert, the mountain reveals new perspectives at every stage. The northern traverse is especially rewarding, offering expansive views towards Kenya, dramatic volcanic scenery and a sense of solitude that makes this route distinct from the busier approaches.

The journey gradually leads towards the eastern side of Kibo before turning towards the summit. With several days spent exploring different elevations and landscapes, the Northern Circuit provides valuable opportunities for acclimatisation, although altitude sickness remains a risk and summit success is never guaranteed. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak is demanding, requiring patience, determination and careful guidance from your mountain team. After the summit attempt, descend through the southern slopes to Mweka Camp and continue to the park gate the following day. Back to Eden Adventure takes care of the arrangements so you can concentrate on the experience, the changing scenery and the extraordinary achievement of climbing Africa’s highest mountain.
