Journey Overview

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route is an experience of extraordinary contrasts, taking you from the deep green rainforest to open moorland, the rugged alpine desert and the icy landscapes surrounding Africa’s highest summit. Known for its dramatic scenery, the route crosses the Shira Plateau, passes the imposing Lava Tower and approaches the summit through the spectacular Barranco Valley. Each stage reveals another side of the mountain, building towards the challenge of reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

This six-day climb is designed for trekkers who want a shorter mountain expedition without sacrificing the remarkable landscapes that make Machame so memorable. An additional day in Moshi before the climb allows time for equipment checks, hiring missing gear and a detailed briefing with your mountain team. The shorter route is physically demanding, particularly where the Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley and ascent to Barafu Camp are combined into one long day before summit night. Experienced guides and a dedicated support crew will accompany you, with safety and altitude awareness remaining central throughout the journey.

Your Signature Journey

Your journey with Back to Eden Adventures is designed around you. The itinerary below offers a glimpse of what your safari could look like, thoughtfully crafted to inspire a private journey tailored to your interests, pace, and preferences.

Arrival Day

Welcome to the Foot of Kilimanjaro

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your private transfer will welcome you and take you to your hotel in Moshi. Resting beneath the slopes of Kilimanjaro, this town provides a comfortable starting point for your expedition. After checking in, take time to relax after your journey, enjoy a meal and appreciate the atmosphere of Tanzania’s mountain region. If the weather is clear, you may catch your first glimpse of Kilimanjaro rising above the surrounding landscape.

Your climb begins with a day dedicated to preparation rather than immediately heading onto the trail. Your team will explain the arrangements for the equipment check, discuss the mountain schedule and answer any initial questions. Enjoy a relaxed evening and a good night’s sleep before meeting your guides and preparing for the physical challenge ahead.

Day 1: Moshi

The Essentials Before the Ascent

Today is reserved for checking your hiking equipment, trying on essential gear and hiring any missing items where available. Your team will review your hiking boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, insulated clothing, warm layers, trekking poles, headlamp, sleeping bag and daypack. Properly fitting equipment is especially important on a multi-day climb, when small discomforts can become more difficult to manage. Your guide will help ensure that your equipment is appropriate for the changing temperatures and terrain.

You will also attend a pre-climb briefing covering the Machame Route, daily hiking routine, camp arrangements, hydration, nutrition and altitude awareness. Your guide will explain the importance of a slow pace, regular fluid intake and promptly reporting symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Once your bags are organised and the equipment check is complete, take the remainder of the day to rest and prepare for an early departure. Tomorrow, your journey begins beneath Kilimanjaro’s forest canopy.

Day 2: Machame Gate → Machame Camp

The Forest Trail to the First Camp

Distance: Approximately 11 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Altitude: Machame Gate, approximately 1,800 m → Machame Camp, approximately 2,835–3,010 m
Habitat: Montane rainforest

After breakfast, travel from Moshi to Machame Gate, where your guide completes park registration and the mountain crew prepares for the climb. Once the formalities are complete, begin hiking along a winding forest trail that gradually climbs the mountain’s southern slopes. The rainforest is rich with moss-covered trees, ferns and tangled roots, while birdsong and the movement of forest life create a peaceful atmosphere around the trail. Following rain, sections can be muddy and slippery, so waterproof footwear and trekking poles are useful.

Continue uphill through the forest towards Machame Camp, where the vegetation begins to thin as you approach the upper edge of the rainforest zone. Your crew will prepare camp and a warm evening meal while you settle in after your first day of hiking. Take time to drink water, eat well and rest, as the following day brings a climb into more open terrain. The mountain is now your world for the days ahead, and maintaining a comfortable pace from the beginning is essential.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 3: Machame Camp → Shira Camp

Rising Above the Green Slopes

Distance: Approximately 5 km
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Altitude: Machame Camp, approximately 2,835–3,010 m → Shira Camp, approximately 3,750–3,840 m
Habitat: Heath and moorland

Leave Machame Camp after breakfast and follow a steadily ascending trail away from the rainforest. The path becomes rockier as you climb a ridge covered in heather and other high-altitude vegetation. With fewer trees around you, the views begin to open across the mountain’s slopes, revealing a sense of the scale and remoteness of Kilimanjaro. The shorter distance does not mean the day is effortless, as the elevation gain makes it important to walk slowly and take regular breaks.

Continue towards the Shira Plateau, an expansive volcanic landscape where the vegetation is shorter and the horizon stretches towards Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s highest cone. Arrive at Shira Camp and settle in while your crew prepares your meal and sleeping arrangements. The open surroundings offer a striking contrast to the forest of the previous day. Your guide will continue monitoring how you are adjusting to the altitude before tomorrow’s longer stage towards Lava Tower and Barranco Camp.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 4: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

The High Plateau and the Descent into Barranco

Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Altitude: Shira Camp, approximately 3,750–3,840 m → Lava Tower, approximately 4,630 m → Barranco Camp, approximately 3,960 m
Habitat: Alpine moorland and semi-desert

Today takes you east across the high mountain terrain towards Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation standing above the surrounding landscape. The route climbs through rocky ground and sparse vegetation, with the air growing thinner as you approach approximately 4,630 metres. Your guide will maintain a measured pace and schedule breaks to help you manage the ascent. The broad views across Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes make this a remarkable stage, but your wellbeing remains more important than reaching any particular point.

After spending time in the Lava Tower area, descend towards Barranco Camp, situated in a dramatic valley beneath steep mountain walls. This “climb high, sleep low” approach is an important part of the route’s acclimatisation strategy, exposing your body to a higher elevation before you sleep lower. As you descend, look for giant groundsels and other distinctive high-altitude plants growing among the rocky slopes. Arrive at camp for dinner and rest, preparing for the famous Barranco Wall the next morning.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Valley → Barafu Camp

One Long Climb Towards the Summit

Distance: Approximately 9 km
Hiking time: 8–10 hours
Altitude: Barranco Camp, approximately 3,960 m → Karanga Valley, approximately 4,035 m → Barafu Camp, approximately 4,640–4,673 m
Habitat: Alpine desert and rocky mountain ridges

Begin the day with the ascent of the Barranco Wall, one of the most recognisable and exhilarating sections of the Machame Route. The path climbs steeply over rocky terrain, requiring careful footing and occasional use of your hands for balance. Although it is not a technical rock-climbing route, some sections are exposed, so follow your guide’s instructions and move at a controlled pace. Beyond the wall, continue across ridges and descend towards Karanga Valley, with dramatic views of Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes and upper mountain terrain.

From Karanga, continue climbing towards Barafu Camp, the high camp from which the summit attempt begins. Combining these sections makes this a strenuous day, with many hours of hiking at altitude and limited time for extended rest. Your guide will monitor your condition and adjust the pace as necessary; safety takes priority over maintaining a fixed schedule. On reaching Barafu, eat, organise your summit clothing and headlamp, and attend the final briefing. After an early meal, try to rest before the late-night departure towards Uhuru Peak.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Uhuru Peak — Reaching the Highest Point in Africa

Distance: Approximately 5 km ascent and 12 km descent
Hiking time: Around 7–8 hours to the summit, followed by approximately 4–6 hours descending
Altitude: Barafu Camp, approximately 4,673 m → Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m → Mweka Camp, approximately 3,100 m
Habitat: Alpine desert, summit terrain and upper rainforest

The summit attempt usually begins around midnight, as you set out beneath the stars and climb slowly across steep scree and rocky ground towards Stella Point on the crater rim. Darkness, cold temperatures and the thin air make this the most physically and mentally demanding part of the expedition. Your guides will establish a careful pace, monitor your condition and schedule breaks when needed. Reaching Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres is a significant milestone, and, weather permitting, the first light of sunrise may reveal the glaciers and vast volcanic landscape around the summit.

From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. Take a moment to appreciate the achievement and photograph the summit when conditions permit. Reaching the peak cannot be guaranteed, and your guide may stop or modify the ascent if safety requires it. After the summit attempt, descend towards Barafu and continue to Mweka Camp, where the lower elevation provides a welcome change after the high mountain terrain. The long descent can be tiring, so use trekking poles and take care on loose ground before settling in for dinner and a well-earned rest.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 7: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

Returning from the Mountain with Pride

Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Mweka Camp, approximately 3,100 m → Mweka Gate, approximately 1,640 m
Habitat: Upper forest and montane rainforest

After breakfast, begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro’s forested slopes towards Mweka Gate. The return of thicker vegetation, warmer air and familiar forest sounds brings a welcome change after the cold, exposed summit terrain. The path may be muddy or slippery, particularly after rainfall, so continue carefully and use trekking poles where helpful. Your mountain crew will accompany you through the final stretch, marking the end of your time on the trail.

At Mweka Gate, complete the park formalities and receive your summit certificate if you reached the relevant summit point. Say farewell to the guides and support crew who have helped you throughout the expedition before meeting your transfer back to Moshi. At your hotel, enjoy a shower, a satisfying meal and time to recover from the climb. The memories of the rainforest, the high plateau, Lava Tower and the effort of the summit ascent will remain long after you leave the mountain.

Day 8: Moshi → Airport / Departure

Carry the Mountain with You

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and a relaxed morning, depending on your flight schedule. After the physical demands of the climb, this is an opportunity to rest, reflect on your experience and prepare for your onward journey. If time allows, you may enjoy a little more of Moshi before your private transfer arrives.

When it is time to leave, your driver will take you to Kilimanjaro International Airport or another agreed departure point. As you depart Tanzania, carry the memory of walking through the forest, crossing the Shira Plateau, climbing the Barranco Wall and pushing towards Africa’s highest summit. Kilimanjaro is more than a destination reached; it is a challenge shaped by preparation, perseverance and the people who support you along the way.

Questions Before You Go

Every journey with Back to Eden Adventures is thoughtfully designed around your interests, pace, and sense of adventure. Here you’ll find answers to the questions our guests often ask about planning, accommodation, activities, logistics, and what to expect along the way. If there’s anything you’re still wondering about, our team is always here to help you plan your journey with confidence.

You are expected to carry your own day pack, with only things which should be able to sustain you until you reach the next camp at the end of the day. You do not need to carry your personal backpack/ duffel pack – It will be carried by our porters.
No worries about that – this is a common concern. It is much better for your body if you proceed slowly and guides will permanently remind you about this (“pole-pole” – which means “slowly slowly”). By walking slowly, your body will much better acclimatize to high altitude. There is plenty of time allocated each day for the treks, even for those who like to go very slowly.
Some climbers may fall short of reaching the summit, but not at the expense of their overall experience. Even for those who never reached the top, the experience of the wonders of Kilimanjaro is very rewarding. If one or more members of the group decide they cannot continue, or if a guide deems it unsafe for an individual (or a group) to continue, they are escorted to the most convenient campsite or Hut. Our guides intimately know the network of shortcuts to escort climbers to safety, and they are trained to act quickly and calmly under any circumstance.
On the Marangu Route, there are simple basic Huts. The first 2 Huts sleep four people each and the last Hut is a dome-style with bunk beds. On all the other routes, you will sleep in 3 dome-style Tents, two people each. The Tents are modern and have an outer flysheet and large vestibules to keep equipment from the elements. They are set up, broken down, and carried- along with everything else- by our porters. There are public toilets set up at every campsite, but portable toilets are available upon request at the cost of $ 100 per group for the whole tour. Hot water is provided for each person every morning but No showers during the trek There will be dining tents with chairs and tables where all meals will be served. Before any meal, we will provide soap and hot water for washing your hands.
For each trek on the Mount a dedicated cook will be part of the logistical team. They are professional chefs and can prepare different kinds of dishes. Please see a sample page for Dietary Menu.
You shouldn’t worry- You are in safe hands. Our guides are professionally trained to handle all sorts of distress and respond quickly and accordingly. They all have Wilderness First Aid Responder qualification and they will all time bring you to safety. They will directly call for an emergency evacuation if the situation worsens.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 9 Days Northern Circuit

For those who wish to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers an extraordinary journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. The adventure begins in the western rainforest before climbing onto the vast Shira Plateau, where open moorland and volcanic landscapes reveal sweeping views of Kibo. From there, the trail leaves the more frequently travelled routes behind and follows the remote northern side of the mountain, passing beneath the Lent Hills and across high-altitude terrain with distant views towards Kenya. Each stage reveals a different character of Kilimanjaro, making this route especially rewarding for travellers who value solitude, varied scenery and a more gradual approach to the summit.

With nine days on the mountain, the itinerary allows more time to experience the changing elevations and prepare for the final ascent. The journey passes through alpine desert towards School Hut, where the summit attempt begins during the night. Reaching Uhuru Peak requires endurance, careful pacing and attention to altitude, but standing at 5,895 metres offers a remarkable opportunity to appreciate the scale of Africa’s highest mountain. After the summit attempt, descend towards Millennium Camp before continuing to the park gate. Back to Eden Adventure coordinates the arrangements throughout the journey, allowing you to focus on the mountain, the experience and the achievement of travelling across one of Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive routes.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 8 Days Northern Circuit

For travellers who want to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its most familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers a remarkable journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. Beginning on the western side, the route passes through lush rainforest and across the expansive Shira Plateau before reaching remote valleys beneath the rugged Lent Hills. As the landscape changes from dense forest to open moorland and high alpine desert, the mountain reveals new perspectives at every stage. The northern traverse is especially rewarding, offering expansive views towards Kenya, dramatic volcanic scenery and a sense of solitude that makes this route distinct from the busier approaches.

The journey gradually leads towards the eastern side of Kibo before turning towards the summit. With several days spent exploring different elevations and landscapes, the Northern Circuit provides valuable opportunities for acclimatisation, although altitude sickness remains a risk and summit success is never guaranteed. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak is demanding, requiring patience, determination and careful guidance from your mountain team. After the summit attempt, descend through the southern slopes to Mweka Camp and continue to the park gate the following day. Back to Eden Adventure takes care of the arrangements so you can concentrate on the experience, the changing scenery and the extraordinary achievement of climbing Africa’s highest mountain.
