Journey Overview

Some journeys take you across a landscape; others challenge you to discover what you are capable of. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro along the Lemosho Route is one of those rare experiences. Beginning in the lush rainforest on the mountain’s western slopes, the trail leads through open moorland, the vast Shira Plateau and the dramatic alpine desert before reaching the glaciers and summit of Africa’s highest mountain.

Designed with eight days on the mountain, this climb allows time to experience Kilimanjaro’s changing environments while giving your body valuable opportunities to adjust to the altitude. From quiet forest trails and extraordinary mountain panoramas to the demanding overnight summit ascent, every stage has its own character. With experienced mountain guides, a dedicated support crew and careful attention to pace and acclimatisation, Back to Eden Adventure helps you approach the climb with preparation, purpose and respect for the mountain.

Your Signature Journey

Your journey with Back to Eden Adventures is designed around you. The itinerary below offers a glimpse of what your safari could look like, thoughtfully crafted to inspire a private journey tailored to your interests, pace, and preferences.

Arrival Day

Welcome to the Foot of Kilimanjaro

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your private transfer will meet you and take you to your hotel in Moshi, a lively town nestled beneath the slopes of Kilimanjaro. After checking in, take time to settle into your room, rest after your travels and enjoy your first views of the region. On a clear day, the mountain may appear above the surrounding landscape, offering an early glimpse of the adventure ahead.

Your climb begins with preparation rather than rushing straight onto the trail. The evening is an opportunity to relax, enjoy a meal and prepare for your equipment check the following day. Your team will also help you understand the arrangements for the climb, leaving you with time to ask questions and become comfortable with the experience ahead.

Day 1: Moshi

Prepare Well, Climb with Confidence

Today is dedicated to checking your hiking equipment, trying on essential gear and hiring any missing items where available. Your team will review important clothing and equipment, including waterproof layers, warm insulated clothing, hiking boots, trekking poles, a sleeping bag suitable for mountain temperatures, a headlamp and a daypack. Proper fitting matters, particularly for footwear and backpacks, because small discomforts can become significant over several days on the trail.

You will also attend a pre-climb briefing covering the route, daily walking routine, mountain safety, hydration, meals and altitude awareness. Your guide will explain how the team monitors your wellbeing and why walking slowly, communicating symptoms early and following the planned acclimatisation schedule are essential. Use the remaining time to organise your bags, rest and enjoy an early night before your journey into the mountain begins.

Explore Experience
Day 2: Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp

Into the Ancient Mountain Forest

Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Trailhead around 2,100–2,400 m → camp around 2,650–2,780 m
Habitat: Montane rainforest

After breakfast, leave Moshi and travel towards Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side. Once park registration and entry formalities are completed, continue to the Lemosho trailhead. Here, meet the mountain crew and begin walking beneath a canopy of tall trees, where moss-covered branches, ferns and the sounds of forest life create a peaceful introduction to the climb.

The trail climbs gradually through the rainforest towards Mti Mkubwa, also known as Big Tree Camp. Your guide will establish a comfortable walking rhythm, with breaks to drink water and appreciate the surroundings. On arrival, the crew will prepare camp and your evening meal while you settle in among the trees. This first day is deliberately manageable, allowing you to begin adapting to the mountain without unnecessary pressure.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp → Shira 1 Camp

Beyond the Forest into Open Mountain Country

Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Altitude: Around 2,780 m → 3,505–3,610 m
Habitat: Rainforest, heath and moorland

After breakfast, continue uphill as the dense forest gradually gives way to open heathland and moorland. Tall trees become less frequent, replaced by giant heathers, grasses and unusual high-altitude plants. The changing vegetation reveals more of Kilimanjaro’s enormous slopes, and the air begins to feel cooler and thinner as you gain elevation.

Continue towards Shira 1 Camp, situated on the western side of the Shira Plateau. The landscape becomes more expansive, offering views across the plateau and, when the weather is clear, towards Kibo, the mountain’s highest volcanic cone. After reaching camp, take time to rest, eat and drink regularly. Your guides will continue observing how you are adjusting to the altitude before the next stage of the journey.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 4: Shira 1 Camp → Shira Plateau → Moir Hut

Across the Vast Shira Highlands

Distance: Approximately 14 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Altitude: Around 3,505–3,610 m → approximately 4,200 m
Habitat: Moorland and high-altitude terrain

Today takes you deeper across the Shira Plateau, a broad volcanic landscape shaped by Kilimanjaro’s ancient geological history. Walk through open moorland with wide views across the mountain, where rocky ground, hardy vegetation and changing cloud formations create a striking contrast with the rainforest below. The longer walking distance calls for a steady pace, regular breaks and close attention to how you feel.

Continue towards Moir Hut, located near the base of the Lent Hills. This quieter camp offers a different perspective on the mountain and provides an opportunity to gain altitude progressively. Depending on conditions, your guide may suggest a short acclimatisation walk in the surrounding area, provided you are feeling well and the extra activity is appropriate. Return to camp for dinner, hydration and rest before the route climbs higher the following day.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 5: Moir Hut → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Higher into the Alpine Desert

Distance: Approximately 7 km
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Altitude: Around 4,200 m → Lava Tower at approximately 4,630 m → Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 m
Habitat: Alpine desert

Leave Moir Hut and continue across the increasingly rocky landscape towards Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic formation rising above the surrounding terrain. As you approach approximately 4,630 metres, the vegetation becomes sparse and the effects of altitude may become more noticeable. The trail offers a valuable opportunity to practise the slow, consistent pace your guide has encouraged since the first day. Breaks and hydration remain important, and your guide will monitor your condition throughout the ascent.

After the high point, descend towards Barranco Camp, situated in a dramatic valley beneath steep mountain slopes. Although you climb higher during the day, sleeping at a lower elevation is a key feature of the acclimatisation strategy known as “climb high, sleep low.” The descent brings a change in scenery, with striking rock formations and giant groundsels appearing around the valley. Settle into camp for a warm meal and a restful evening.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 6: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

The Barranco Wall and the Southern Valleys

Distance: Approximately 5 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: Around 3,960 m → approximately 4,035 m
Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, begin the day with the ascent of the Barranco Wall, one of the most memorable sections of the Lemosho Route. The path winds up a steep rocky face, requiring careful footing and occasional use of your hands for balance. It is not a technical rock-climbing route, but some sections are exposed and demand concentration. Your guide will help you negotiate the terrain safely and at a pace that suits the group.

Beyond the wall, the trail crosses a series of ridges and valleys, revealing changing views of Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes and surrounding glaciers when visibility allows. The walking distance is relatively short, but the terrain makes it important to conserve energy and maintain a steady rhythm. Arrive at Karanga Camp with time to rest, replenish fluids and enjoy the mountain surroundings before the ascent to Barafu, the final camp before the summit attempt.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 7: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

The Final Ascent Before the Summit

Distance: Approximately 4 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: Around 4,035 m → approximately 4,673 m
Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, continue uphill through the stark alpine desert towards Barafu Camp. The trail passes across rocky slopes with little vegetation, and the air becomes noticeably thinner as you approach the high camp. Though the distance is short compared with earlier days, the elevation gain makes a measured pace essential. Your guides will encourage you to take small steps, rest when needed and keep drinking water regularly.

Arrive at Barafu Camp with time to eat, organise your summit equipment and prepare for the night ahead. Your guide will review the summit plan, clothing layers, headlamp, walking pace and safety procedures. An early dinner is followed by an attempt to rest before the midnight or late-night departure. The summit push is the most demanding stage of the climb, so conserving energy and following your guide’s instructions are especially important.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 8: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Standing on the Roof of Africa

Distance: Approximately 5 km ascent and 12 km descent
Hiking time: Around 7–8 hours to the summit, followed by approximately 4–6 hours of descent; conditions can make the day longer
Altitude: Approximately 4,673 m → Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m → Mweka Camp around 3,100 m
Habitat: Alpine desert, summit terrain and upper rainforest

The summit attempt begins in darkness, usually around midnight, as you climb slowly across steep scree and rocky ground towards Stella Point on the crater rim. The cold, darkness and thin air make this a physically and mentally demanding ascent. Your guides will set a careful pace and monitor the group’s condition, with breaks as needed. Reaching Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres brings you to the crater rim, where the first light of sunrise may illuminate the surrounding glaciers and volcanic landscape.

From Stella Point, continue along the rim towards Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 metres — the highest point in Africa. Take time to acknowledge the achievement and enjoy the extraordinary surroundings, weather and conditions permitting. After the summit, begin the long descent, returning through Barafu before continuing to Mweka Camp. The change in altitude is significant, and the descent can be tiring on the legs, so trekking poles and careful footing are valuable. At camp, enjoy dinner and a well-earned night of rest.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 9: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

Leaving the Mountain with a New Perspective

Distance: Approximately 10 km to Mweka Gate
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Around 3,100 m → approximately 1,640 m
Habitat: Moorland transitioning into rainforest

After breakfast, begin the final walk down through Kilimanjaro’s upper forest towards Mweka Gate. Following several days in high-altitude landscapes, the return of thicker vegetation, warmer air and forest sounds creates a welcome change. The path may be muddy or slippery, particularly after rain, so continue carefully and use your trekking poles where helpful.

At the gate, complete the required park formalities and collect your summit certificate if you reached the relevant summit point. Say farewell to your mountain crew before meeting your transfer for the journey back to Moshi. At your hotel, enjoy a shower, a proper meal and the comfort of a real bed. The climb is complete, but the memory of walking through several worlds to reach the highest point in Africa will stay with you long after you leave the mountain.

Carry the Mountain with You

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and a relaxed morning, depending on your flight schedule. After the effort of the climb, this is an opportunity to recover, reflect on the experience and prepare for your onward journey. If time permits, you can enjoy a little of Moshi before your private transfer.

When it is time to depart, your driver will take you to Kilimanjaro International Airport or another agreed departure point. You leave with more than photographs: the quiet of the rainforest, the vastness of the Shira Plateau, the challenge of the summit night and the satisfaction of reaching Uhuru Peak. Kilimanjaro becomes a part of your story — a reminder of what patience, preparation and determination can make possible.

Questions Before You Go

Every journey with Back to Eden Adventures is thoughtfully designed around your interests, pace, and sense of adventure. Here you’ll find answers to the questions our guests often ask about planning, accommodation, activities, logistics, and what to expect along the way. If there’s anything you’re still wondering about, our team is always here to help you plan your journey with confidence.

You are expected to carry your own day pack, with only things which should be able to sustain you until you reach the next camp at the end of the day. You do not need to carry your personal backpack/ duffel pack – It will be carried by our porters.
No worries about that – this is a common concern. It is much better for your body if you proceed slowly and guides will permanently remind you about this (“pole-pole” – which means “slowly slowly”). By walking slowly, your body will much better acclimatize to high altitude. There is plenty of time allocated each day for the treks, even for those who like to go very slowly.
Some climbers may fall short of reaching the summit, but not at the expense of their overall experience. Even for those who never reached the top, the experience of the wonders of Kilimanjaro is very rewarding. If one or more members of the group decide they cannot continue, or if a guide deems it unsafe for an individual (or a group) to continue, they are escorted to the most convenient campsite or Hut. Our guides intimately know the network of shortcuts to escort climbers to safety, and they are trained to act quickly and calmly under any circumstance.
On the Marangu Route, there are simple basic Huts. The first 2 Huts sleep four people each and the last Hut is a dome-style with bunk beds. On all the other routes, you will sleep in 3 dome-style Tents, two people each. The Tents are modern and have an outer flysheet and large vestibules to keep equipment from the elements. They are set up, broken down, and carried- along with everything else- by our porters. There are public toilets set up at every campsite, but portable toilets are available upon request at the cost of $ 100 per group for the whole tour. Hot water is provided for each person every morning but No showers during the trek There will be dining tents with chairs and tables where all meals will be served. Before any meal, we will provide soap and hot water for washing your hands.
For each trek on the Mount a dedicated cook will be part of the logistical team. They are professional chefs and can prepare different kinds of dishes. Please see a sample page for Dietary Menu.
You shouldn’t worry- You are in safe hands. Our guides are professionally trained to handle all sorts of distress and respond quickly and accordingly. They all have Wilderness First Aid Responder qualification and they will all time bring you to safety. They will directly call for an emergency evacuation if the situation worsens.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 9 Days Northern Circuit

For those who wish to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers an extraordinary journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. The adventure begins in the western rainforest before climbing onto the vast Shira Plateau, where open moorland and volcanic landscapes reveal sweeping views of Kibo. From there, the trail leaves the more frequently travelled routes behind and follows the remote northern side of the mountain, passing beneath the Lent Hills and across high-altitude terrain with distant views towards Kenya. Each stage reveals a different character of Kilimanjaro, making this route especially rewarding for travellers who value solitude, varied scenery and a more gradual approach to the summit.

With nine days on the mountain, the itinerary allows more time to experience the changing elevations and prepare for the final ascent. The journey passes through alpine desert towards School Hut, where the summit attempt begins during the night. Reaching Uhuru Peak requires endurance, careful pacing and attention to altitude, but standing at 5,895 metres offers a remarkable opportunity to appreciate the scale of Africa’s highest mountain. After the summit attempt, descend towards Millennium Camp before continuing to the park gate. Back to Eden Adventure coordinates the arrangements throughout the journey, allowing you to focus on the mountain, the experience and the achievement of travelling across one of Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive routes.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 8 Days Northern Circuit

For travellers who want to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its most familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers a remarkable journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. Beginning on the western side, the route passes through lush rainforest and across the expansive Shira Plateau before reaching remote valleys beneath the rugged Lent Hills. As the landscape changes from dense forest to open moorland and high alpine desert, the mountain reveals new perspectives at every stage. The northern traverse is especially rewarding, offering expansive views towards Kenya, dramatic volcanic scenery and a sense of solitude that makes this route distinct from the busier approaches.

The journey gradually leads towards the eastern side of Kibo before turning towards the summit. With several days spent exploring different elevations and landscapes, the Northern Circuit provides valuable opportunities for acclimatisation, although altitude sickness remains a risk and summit success is never guaranteed. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak is demanding, requiring patience, determination and careful guidance from your mountain team. After the summit attempt, descend through the southern slopes to Mweka Camp and continue to the park gate the following day. Back to Eden Adventure takes care of the arrangements so you can concentrate on the experience, the changing scenery and the extraordinary achievement of climbing Africa’s highest mountain.
