Your curated itinerary unveils an exclusive collection of exceptional destinations, custom-tailored for an unforgettable voyage.
Mount Kilimanjaro reveals a quieter, more remote character along the Rongai Route, which approaches the mountain from the north near the Kenyan border. Beginning among rural landscapes and forested slopes, the trail gradually opens into expansive moorland, where the views stretch across the northern plains and towards the rugged towers of Mawenzi Peak. With fewer crowds than some of Kilimanjaro’s popular southern routes, this ascent offers a wonderful sense of solitude and a closer connection with the mountain’s changing landscapes. Each camp brings you deeper into the highlands, from the peaceful surroundings of Simba Camp to the dramatic setting beneath Mawenzi.
As the route climbs towards Kibo Hut, the terrain becomes increasingly barren and the summit draws closer. The final ascent begins during the night, when your guide leads you across volcanic slopes towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. This six-day itinerary combines several trekking stages, making it a demanding option that requires good fitness, careful pacing and attention to altitude. After the summit attempt, descend through Horombo Hut and the southern slopes to Marangu Gate. Back to Eden Adventure coordinates the arrangements so you can focus on the challenge, the remarkable scenery and the experience of climbing one of the world’s most iconic mountains.

Your journey with Back to Eden Adventures is designed around you. The itinerary below offers a glimpse of what your safari could look like, thoughtfully crafted to inspire a private journey tailored to your interests, pace, and preferences.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a representative from Back to Eden Adventure will welcome you to Tanzania and arrange your transfer to Moshi. As you travel towards town, enjoy your first views of the surrounding countryside, local villages and, when the weather allows, the impressive outline of Mount Kilimanjaro. Once at your hotel, settle into your room and take time to recover from your journey before the adventure ahead.
The remainder of the day is yours to relax and prepare mentally for the climb. Enjoy a comfortable evening in Moshi, have a nourishing meal and get a good night’s rest. If Kilimanjaro is visible, its snow-capped summit may offer your first glimpse of the challenge waiting above the clouds. Your mountain adventure begins with a clear mind, a rested body and the anticipation of exploring one of Africa’s most remarkable landscapes.

Meet your mountain guide for a pre-climb briefing covering the Rongai Route, the daily hiking stages, altitude awareness and essential safety procedures. Together, review your trekking equipment, including your hiking boots, warm layers, waterproof clothing, headlamp and sleeping bag. Any missing equipment can be identified and arranged for hire before departure. Proper preparation is especially important on Kilimanjaro, where temperatures and weather conditions can change considerably as you gain altitude.
Your guide will explain how the mountain crew supports the trek and what to expect at each campsite, including meals, overnight arrangements and the early start required for the summit attempt. This is also the ideal time to ask questions and discuss any concerns about the route or physical demands. Once the preparations are complete, organise your daypack and enjoy a restful evening in Moshi. Arriving on the mountain well prepared allows you to focus on the experience rather than equipment or last-minute arrangements.

Explore ExperienceDistance: Approximately 6–8 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Rongai Gate, approximately 1,950 m → Simba Camp, approximately 2,625–2,650 m
Habitat: Farmland and montane forest
After breakfast, travel from Moshi towards the Rongai trailhead near the Kenyan border, passing through villages, cultivated fields and rural landscapes. Following registration and the necessary park formalities, begin your hike through farmland and into the mountain’s northern forest. The trail climbs gradually beneath trees and through quieter woodland, where birdsong and the sounds of nature accompany your first steps on Kilimanjaro. Compared with some of the busier southern approaches, the Rongai Route often offers a more peaceful beginning to the climb.
Continue at a steady pace towards Simba Camp, situated near the upper edge of the forest zone. As the vegetation begins to thin, the landscape opens to wider views across the northern plains, and the air gradually becomes cooler. Your mountain crew will prepare camp and your evening meal while you settle in after the first day of hiking. Take time to hydrate, eat well and rest, allowing your body to begin adapting to the altitude before the trail climbs higher the following day.
Distance: Approximately 11–12 km
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Altitude: Simba Camp, approximately 2,625–2,650 m → Kikelewa Camp, approximately 3,600–3,630 m
Habitat: Montane forest edge, heathland and moorland
Leave Simba Camp after breakfast and continue ascending across Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes. The trail gradually leaves the forest behind, opening into broad moorland with grasses, heather and scattered high-altitude plants. As you gain height, the landscape becomes more expansive, and views towards Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding plains begin to emerge. The route passes the Second Cave area, providing an opportunity to pause, rest and appreciate the increasingly dramatic mountain scenery before continuing towards Kikelewa Camp.
The journey continues across exposed highland terrain, where the vegetation becomes more sparse and the air noticeably cooler. Although the path is not continuously steep, the combined distance and altitude gain make this one of the more demanding trekking days before the summit attempt. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp in a sheltered valley beneath the rugged slopes of Mawenzi. After settling in, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, replenish your fluids and allow your body time to recover. Your guide will monitor your condition and encourage a slow, steady approach as the route moves towards higher elevations.
Distance: Approximately 5–6 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Kikelewa Camp, approximately 3,600–3,630 m → Mawenzi Tarn Camp, approximately 4,330 m
Habitat: Alpine heath and high-altitude semi-desert
Today’s trail climbs more noticeably as you leave Kikelewa Camp and ascend grassy slopes towards the dramatic highlands beneath Mawenzi Peak. The route is shorter than some previous stages, but the increasing altitude makes it important to walk slowly and avoid rushing. As you climb, the vegetation becomes smaller and more scattered, revealing a rugged landscape of volcanic rock and open mountain terrain. Mawenzi’s sharp ridges rise above the trail, creating one of the most distinctive mountain settings along the Rongai Route.
Reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp, spectacularly positioned in a natural basin beneath the towering rock formations of Mawenzi. The surrounding scenery feels wild and remote, with steep slopes, rocky ridgelines and broad views across the high-altitude landscape. Depending on the itinerary and your guide’s assessment, the afternoon may be used for rest or a short acclimatisation walk before returning to camp. Spend the evening eating well, drinking regularly and preparing for the crossing towards Kibo Hut. This is a memorable stop where the mountain’s scale and solitude become especially apparent.
Distance: Approximately 8–10 km
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Altitude: Mawenzi Tarn Camp, approximately 4,330 m → Kibo Hut, approximately 4,700 m
Habitat: Alpine desert
After breakfast, leave Mawenzi Tarn and cross the broad, exposed landscape known as the Saddle, which stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail moves through an increasingly barren world where vegetation becomes scarce and volcanic ground dominates the scenery. The immense slopes of Kibo gradually draw closer as you cross this high-altitude plateau, while Mawenzi’s rugged towers recede behind you. The terrain can feel stark and otherworldly, with wide skies, changing light and an extraordinary sense of space.
Continue towards Kibo Hut, situated at the base of Kibo’s upper slopes. Upon arrival, settle in, enjoy your meal and listen carefully to your guide’s instructions for the summit attempt. The evening is deliberately quiet, with time to rest and prepare your clothing, headlamp, water and essential equipment before the night climb. You will usually be asked to sleep early before an overnight start, although altitude and anticipation can make rest difficult. Keep warm, follow your guide’s advice and conserve your energy for the demanding ascent ahead.

Distance: Approximately 5–6 km ascent to Uhuru Peak, followed by a long descent to Horombo Hut; total distance varies by route and conditions
Hiking time: Approximately 12–16 hours or longer
Altitude: Kibo Hut, approximately 4,700 m → Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m → Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m
Habitat: Alpine desert, arctic summit zone and high moorland
The summit attempt begins during the night, when you leave Kibo Hut under a sky filled with stars, guided by your experienced mountain team. The trail climbs steeply over volcanic scree towards Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, demanding patience, concentration and a slow, controlled pace. From there, continue along the rim towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres. As dawn approaches, the first light may illuminate the surrounding glaciers and the immense crater landscape, creating a powerful moment after hours of determined effort. Reaching the summit depends on your health, weather, altitude response and the guide’s safety assessment.
After celebrating briefly at Uhuru Peak and taking photographs when conditions permit, begin the descent towards Kibo Hut before continuing down to Horombo Hut, according to the guide’s assessment and the group’s condition. This is an exceptionally long and physically demanding day, combining the summit ascent with a substantial descent. Your guide will set a safe pace and may adjust the plan if conditions require it. At Horombo Hut, enjoy a well-earned meal and rest after the effort of the summit. Whether you reach the summit or turn back for safety, the day’s achievement lies in respecting the mountain and the journey you have undertaken.

Distance: Approximately 18–20 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Altitude: Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m → Marangu Gate, approximately 1,860 m
Habitat: Moorland and montane rainforest
After breakfast at Horombo Hut, begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro’s broad moorland slopes. The trail gradually loses altitude, and the landscape changes as you pass through familiar highland vegetation towards the cooler, greener lower mountain. After the stark terrain near the summit, the return of grasses, shrubs and eventually forest brings a welcome change in scenery. Take care on the downhill sections, as tired legs can make uneven ground more challenging, and follow your guide’s pace throughout the descent.
Continue to Marangu Gate, where the mountain trek concludes and summit certificates may be presented to eligible climbers. After completing the necessary park formalities, meet your transfer and return to Moshi. The drive offers time to reflect on the different landscapes you have crossed, from the quiet northern forest to the exposed Saddle and the high slopes of Kibo. Back at your hotel, enjoy a hot shower, a proper meal and a comfortable bed. Your Rongai adventure comes to a close with the memories of the mountain and the effort it took to explore it.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and a relaxed morning, depending on your flight schedule. After the demands of the climb, this is an opportunity to recover, reflect on your experience and prepare for your onward journey. If time allows, you may enjoy a little more of Moshi before your transfer arrives.
When it is time to depart, your driver will take you to Kilimanjaro International Airport or another agreed departure point. As you leave Tanzania, carry with you the memory of walking from the forest into the high alpine world, facing the Barranco Wall and pushing towards Uhuru Peak beneath the night sky. Kilimanjaro is not only a summit to reach; it is a journey shaped by preparation, perseverance and the people who walk beside you.
