Where ancient cultures endure

Far from the well-traveled safari routes, Lake Eyasi offers a deeply authentic encounter with Tanzania’s landscapes, traditions, and people. Surrounded by rugged hills, dry plains, and seasonal wetlands, the lake is home to the Hadzabe and Datoga communities, whose traditions remain closely connected to the land. From joining the Hadzabe on an early-morning hunting experience to meeting Datoga artisans and discovering life around the lake, Lake Eyasi invites you to experience a quieter and more human side of Tanzania with Back to Eden Adventure.

Overview

In the remote landscapes south of the Ngorongoro highlands lies Lake Eyasi, a vast alkaline lake surrounded by rugged escarpments, dry plains, acacia woodland, and traditional villages. Unlike Tanzania’s famous wildlife destinations, Lake Eyasi is defined less by large concentrations of animals and more by the people and cultures that have lived alongside this landscape for generations. The lake offers travelers an opportunity to slow down, step beyond the traditional safari experience, and connect with communities whose relationship with nature remains deeply rooted in their daily lives.

A journey into ancient traditions

Lake Eyasi is best known as a place to encounter the Hadzabe, one of Tanzania’s most distinctive indigenous communities. Accompanying Hadzabe hunters in the early morning offers a rare opportunity to observe traditional hunting and gathering practices passed down through generations. The experience is not a staged performance but a glimpse into a way of life shaped by the land, seasons, and knowledge of the natural world. Nearby, the Datoga people are known for their traditional metalworking, craftsmanship, and pastoral heritage, offering another fascinating perspective on the cultural diversity of northern Tanzania.

Where people and nature meet

The landscapes around Lake Eyasi are raw, peaceful, and strikingly different from the famous plains of Serengeti or the forests of Manyara. The lake changes with the seasons, sometimes appearing as a shimmering expanse beneath the surrounding hills and at other times revealing broad areas of exposed shoreline. Birdlife gathers around its waters, while the surrounding countryside supports a variety of wildlife adapted to the dry environment. Yet the greatest treasure of Lake Eyasi is its sense of authenticity—the opportunity to share time, conversation, and experiences with communities whose lives remain closely connected to the natural world. With Back to Eden Adventure, a visit to Lake Eyasi becomes more than a stop on a safari; it becomes a meaningful journey into the living heritage of Tanzania.

When to Go

Best time to Visit Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi can be visited throughout the year, with the best time depending largely on the cultural experiences you wish to enjoy and the condition of the surrounding landscape. The dry months generally offer easier travel conditions and are particularly suitable for early-morning cultural experiences with the Hadzabe. The green season brings fresh vegetation and a more vibrant landscape, while the changing water levels create a different character around the lake.

The beginning of the year brings fresh vegetation to the areas surrounding Lake Eyasi. The landscape can feel more vibrant following seasonal rains, while mornings offer comfortable conditions for cultural visits and exploration. Encounters with the Hadzabe and Datoga provide the main focus of a journey during this period, allowing travelers to discover traditions, craftsmanship, and daily life in a setting that feels far removed from conventional tourist routes.

The long rains bring dramatic skies and renewed life to the Lake Eyasi landscape. The surrounding plains and hills become greener, creating beautiful contrasts with the lake and rugged terrain. Travel conditions can be more challenging at times because of rain, but for travelers seeking solitude, fresh landscapes, and an intimate cultural experience, this period offers a rewarding perspective of the region.

The dry season is one of the most popular times to visit Lake Eyasi. Dry conditions generally make access easier, while cool early mornings provide ideal opportunities to join the Hadzabe on traditional hunting and gathering experiences. Visits to Datoga communities can also reveal their distinctive metalworking traditions and pastoral lifestyle. The dry landscape, clear skies, and peaceful surroundings create a powerful sense of place.

The short rains begin to refresh the landscape around Lake Eyasi, bringing new vegetation and changing the appearance of the surrounding plains. The atmosphere becomes greener and more vibrant, while birdlife can become particularly rewarding around the lake. This is an excellent period for travelers who want to combine cultural discovery with beautiful seasonal scenery and a quieter experience away from the major safari circuits.

FROM OUR EXPERT

Top Experience

At Back to Eden Adventures, we believe the best journeys are about the moments you remember. Experience the beauty of Tanzania, from its wild landscapes and incredible wildlife to its rich culture and warm people. Discover, explore, and create memories that stay with you long after your journey ends.

Hadzabe Cultural Experience

In the remote landscapes around Lake Eyasi, northern Tanzania, the Hadzabe offer an opportunity to learn about one of the region’s distinctive Indigenous cultures. Visiting a Hadzabe community provides a chance to step away from the usual safari experience and discover a way of life closely connected to the surrounding land. The experience is shaped by the people themselves, their traditions, their knowledge of nature, and the relationship between community and environment. During your visit, you may learn about traditional hunting and gathering practices, discover how local plants are used, and hear about the knowledge passed between generations. Depending on the community and the day of your visit, there may also be opportunities to observe traditional skills, spend time with community members, and learn about their daily lives. Rather than simply watching from a distance, the experience encourages respectful interaction and conversation, creating a more meaningful understanding of Hadzabe culture. The Hadzabe experience offers a different perspective on Tanzania—one that is rooted in people, place, and traditional knowledge. It can be combined with a safari around Lake Eyasi, Ngorongoro, or northern Tanzania, creating a natural cultural element within a wider journey. For travellers interested in authentic encounters, local traditions, and learning from communities whose lives remain deeply connected to their environment, a visit to the Hadzabe can become one of the most memorable parts of a Tanzania safari.

Bird Watching Safari

Africa is home to an extraordinary variety of birdlife, from colourful kingfishers and bee-eaters to majestic eagles, vultures, storks, flamingos, and countless smaller species hidden among the trees and grasslands. A bird watching safari invites you to slow down and look beyond the larger wildlife, discovering the sounds, colours, movements, and behaviours that bring every landscape to life. From wetlands and forests to open savannah, each habitat offers something different to discover. With Back to Eden Adventure, bird watching can become part of your wider safari or a dedicated experience for those who want to explore Africa's remarkable birdlife more closely. An experienced safari guide helps you identify different species, understand their behaviour, recognise their calls, and discover where to look for them. You can enjoy bird watching from a safari vehicle, on foot where permitted, or around your lodge and camp, giving you opportunities to discover birds throughout the day. There is something deeply rewarding about spotting a bird you have never seen before and learning the story behind it. Early mornings can bring a chorus of calls across the wilderness, while changing light can reveal striking colours and beautiful moments for photography. Whether you are an enthusiastic birder, a wildlife lover, a photographer, or simply curious about the natural world, bird watching adds another fascinating layer to your African safari.

Sundowners & Bush Dining

Some of the most memorable moments of a safari happen around a table or beneath an open African sky. Enjoy a beautifully prepared bush breakfast as the first light touches the landscape, pause for a relaxed bush lunch surrounded by nature, or settle into a bush dinner as the day slowly gives way to night. Each meal brings you closer to the landscape, turning time spent eating into another way to experience Africa. With Back to Eden Adventure, safari dining can be thoughtfully arranged to suit the rhythm of your journey. Start the morning with breakfast in the wilderness, enjoy lunch in a peaceful setting during your day of exploration, or end the day with dinner beneath the stars. As the afternoon light begins to soften, a sundowner offers another unforgettable moment—raise a glass as the sun disappears across the horizon, surrounded by the sounds and beauty of the African wilderness. These experiences are about more than food and drinks; they are about atmosphere, connection, and the feeling of being somewhere truly special. Whether watching the sunrise over the savannah during a bush breakfast, enjoying lunch beneath an acacia tree, sharing dinner under the stars, or raising a glass during a spectacular sundowner, every setting adds something unique to your safari. Couples, families, friends, and solo travellers can all enjoy these simple but extraordinary moments that become part of the story of their journey.

Where to Stay When Visiting Lake Eyasi

Rest in comfort and style with carefully selected lodges and luxury camps that bring you closer to the beauty of Tanzania. From peaceful retreats in the wilderness to elegant stays surrounded by nature, Back to Eden Adventures offers exceptional places to stay and make every night part of your journey.

Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge

Perched on a gentle slope above Lake Eyasi, this intimate safari lodge offers a remarkable sense of space, with sweeping views across the seasonal soda lake and toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Surrounded by natural vegetation and shaped by the dramatic landscapes of the Rift Valley, it is a place to slow down and experience a quieter, more deeply cultural side of Tanzania.

The lodge features just 16 spacious en-suite stone cottages, each set within the surrounding vegetation and opening onto a private verandah overlooking the lake. Inside, natural materials and simple furnishings create a comfortable retreat, with queen or twin beds protected by mosquito netting, writing areas and solar-powered lighting and hot water. The intimate setting allows the surrounding landscape to remain the defining feature of every stay.

At the main lodge, guests can relax in the lounge, enjoy a drink at the bar or dine indoors and outdoors while taking in the views. An open-air upper deck creates a beautiful place to pause over the landscape, while the swimming pool offers a refreshing escape after a day on safari or exploring the surrounding region. Fresh continental cuisine and warm Tanzanian hospitality complete the experience.

What makes Lake Eyasi truly special is the world beyond the lodge. This is a region where encounters with the Hadzabe, Datoga and Barabaig communities offer a rare opportunity to discover cultures deeply connected to the land. Guests can also walk toward the lake shore, explore the surrounding landscapes, enjoy birdwatching and hiking, or simply watch the changing colours of the Rift Valley. For Back to Eden Adventure guests, this is a stay that adds culture, stillness and a profound sense of place to a northern Tanzania journey.

Lake Eyasi

Ziwani Lodge

Set between the dramatic walls of the Great Rift Valley and the vast expanse of Lake Eyasi, Ziwani Lodge is a deeply atmospheric retreat shaped by landscape, culture and light. From the moment you pass through its carved North African-style doors, the lodge feels like another world — a place where African and Arabic influences, local materials and stories of the surrounding communities come together in harmony with the wilderness.

The lodge’s ensuite cottages are reached along winding stone pathways and surrounded by palms, acacia and the colours of the dry Rift Valley landscape. Built with locally sourced materials, the cottages feature high ceilings, writing desks, ceiling fans and large wooden shutters that open towards the landscape and Lake Eyasi. The result is an intimate sense of space where natural light, warm textures and the surrounding wilderness become part of the stay.

At the heart of Ziwani, generous verandahs and quiet spaces invite guests to slow down and take in the Yaida Valley. The swimming pool offers a peaceful refuge from the heat, while meals are prepared as a private experience, using fresh, home-cooked and locally sourced ingredients. As evening falls, the rooftop becomes a beautiful place for sundowners, where the lake catches the last golden light and the surrounding wilderness gradually settles into silence.

Yet Ziwani’s greatest luxury is the opportunity to experience a world beyond the usual safari. Walk through the extraordinary landscapes around Lake Eyasi, fish along its shores, spend time with the Hadzabe on a wilderness walk or fly-camp beneath the African sky, and discover the craftsmanship of the Datoga people. For Back to Eden Adventure guests, Ziwani offers something rare — a journey where nature, culture, ancient traditions and human connection become part of the adventure itself.

Lake Eyasi

Tindiga Tented Camp

Set just 1.5 kilometres from Lake Eyasi, Tindiga Tented Camp rests on a gentle hill overlooking the vast shrubland of the Eyasi ecosystem. From this elevated setting, the landscape stretches toward Mount Masumbuku to the west and the distant Ngorongoro highlands to the north. Small, traditional and beautifully removed from the usual safari routes, the camp offers a rare opportunity to experience a quieter and more authentic side of northern Tanzania.

The camp features just 10 spacious cream-coloured canvas tents, creating an intimate atmosphere where the surrounding wilderness remains at the centre of the experience. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom, private veranda, mosquito protection, electric lighting and candlelight, offering simple comforts while preserving the romance of traditional tented living. The camp is built using local materials and follows an eco-friendly approach designed to blend naturally into its surroundings.

At the heart of Tindiga, a cosy rustic restaurant and intimate bar provide a welcoming place to dine and unwind. Guests can enjoy afternoon coffee and tea, gather around the fireplace and boma, or simply sit beneath the evening sky as the sounds of the Eyasi wilderness settle around camp. The restaurant itself carries a special cultural character, having been built by Datoga women and reflecting elements of their traditional craftsmanship and lifestyle.

The greatest experience, however, begins beyond the camp. Tindiga offers guided nature walks, birdwatching and opportunities to explore the shores of Lake Eyasi, but its defining experiences are cultural. Guests can meet the Hadzabe and learn about traditional hunting, fire-making, natural remedies and life close to the land, while visits to the Datoga reveal their renowned blacksmithing, beadwork and craftsmanship. For Back to Eden Adventure guests, Tindiga is not simply a place to sleep — it is an invitation to encounter a living culture and landscape rarely experienced elsewhere.

Lake Eyasi

Kisima Ngeda Camp

Hidden within a peaceful fever-tree forest beside the seasonal waters of Lake Eyasi, Kisima Ngeda Camp offers an intimate escape into one of Tanzania’s most fascinating and untouched landscapes. From its elevated position, the camp looks across the lake towards the Alipi Escarpment, while rocky hills, palms and freshwater springs create a setting that feels beautifully removed from the world beyond. Here, the changing light of the day becomes part of the experience, from quiet mornings to golden sundowners overlooking the lake.

Just eight palm-roofed tented chalets make up the camp, giving Kisima Ngeda a wonderfully personal character. Each chalet is fully equipped with an en-suite bathroom and private veranda, allowing guests to enjoy the sounds, scents and changing colours of the surrounding wilderness from the comfort of their own space. The design is deliberately intimate, blending naturally with the forest and preserving the feeling of being immersed in the landscape rather than simply staying beside it.

The communal heart of the camp is a beautifully relaxed bar, lounge and dining area beneath a palm-thatched roof. Comfortable seating, warm natural materials and expansive views across Lake Eyasi create an inviting place to spend the slower hours of the day. Meals are freshly prepared by chefs from the surrounding community, using seasonal produce from local producers, making dining here feel connected to the people and landscape around the camp.

The experiences beyond the camp are what make Kisima Ngeda truly exceptional. Walk through the forest, explore the lakeshore, discover ancient rock art and hike the surrounding ridges, or spend time with Hadza guides learning about a culture deeply connected to this wilderness. For those seeking something even more immersive, the Ombako Fly Camp takes guests into Hadza country for an overnight experience beneath the African sky, with opportunities to meet Hadza and Datoga communities. For Back to Eden Adventure guests, Kisima Ngeda offers a rare journey beyond the traditional safari — one shaped by landscape, culture, discovery and genuine human connection.

Great safari experience! Planned a trip for my parents and another couple, and they had an amazing time! They mentioned Laurent specifically took very good care of them during the whole tour and to their particular needs whether it was the food, their medical conditions etc. I definitely recommend this tour for safari in Serengeti. Reach out to Laurent! He's so easy to get along with and communicate with so that you can plan in advance with him before your trip.
