Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Arusha, the gateway to Mount Meru and the surrounding wilderness. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy views of the surrounding landscapes or simply take the afternoon to rest before your mountain adventure begins.

Enjoy a relaxed evening and prepare for the days ahead, when you will exchange the comforts of town for forest trails, mountain huts and the remarkable scenery of Arusha National Park.

Today is dedicated to preparation for your Mount Meru climb. Meet your mountain guide for a briefing about the route, daily hiking routine, altitude awareness and mountain safety. Your guide will check your equipment and help ensure that you have the appropriate clothing and essentials for changing temperatures, rain and the cold conditions expected near the summit. If you need additional equipment, rental options can be discussed before the trek begins.

Use the day to organize your daypack, ask questions and understand what to expect during the climb. A well-prepared trek allows you to focus on the landscapes and experiences ahead rather than worrying about missing equipment. After the briefing, enjoy a nourishing meal, drink water regularly and get a good night’s rest before setting out for Arusha National Park the following morning.

After breakfast, drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park to complete registration and meet your mountain team and armed park ranger. Your trek begins across open grassland, where wildlife may be seen grazing in the distance or moving through the landscape. Giraffes, zebras, buffalo and antelope are among the animals that inhabit the park, making this first day distinctive from many other mountain climbs. Continue along the trail as it enters the lush montane rainforest, where towering trees, thick vegetation and the sounds of forest birds create a beautiful natural setting.

The trail climbs steadily through the forest, passing scenic viewpoints and natural features along the way. As you gain altitude, the surroundings become quieter and the landscape opens in places to reveal glimpses of the mountain ahead. By afternoon, arrive at Miriakamba Hut, set in a peaceful forest clearing at approximately 2,514 metres. Settle into the mountain accommodation, enjoy a warm meal prepared by your support team and rest for the next stage of the climb.

After breakfast, leave Miriakamba Hut and continue climbing along the mountain trail. The ascent becomes steeper as the dense forest gradually gives way to heathland and open moorland. Giant heathers and unusual high-altitude plants begin to shape the landscape, while the views become wider with every step. Along the route, you may catch glimpses of Mount Meru’s immense crater and the rugged volcanic formations that define this remarkable mountain.

Arrive at Saddle Hut, located beneath the summit area, where you will have time to rest and prepare for the challenging climb ahead. If conditions and your energy levels allow, you can take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru, approximately 3,820 metres, before returning to camp. This additional walk offers beautiful views and a chance to spend more time in the highlands. Enjoy an early dinner and rest, as the summit attempt will begin during the night.

Your summit attempt begins around midnight or in the early hours of the morning, guided by your mountain team along the steep ridge toward Rhino Point and Cobra Point. The trail becomes increasingly rugged and exposed as you climb over rocky terrain toward the summit. Move carefully and steadily, allowing time for breaks as you gain altitude. As dawn approaches, the sky begins to brighten over the surrounding landscape, revealing the dramatic crater, distant plains and, when weather permits, the magnificent outline of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Continue toward Socialist Peak, Mount Meru’s highest point at 4,566 metres, where you can celebrate your achievement and enjoy the remarkable views. After spending time at the summit, begin the long descent back along the ridge and through the highlands toward Miriakamba Hut. The descent is demanding after the summit climb, so take care on the rocky trail and follow your guide’s instructions. By the time you reach the hut, you will have completed the most challenging day of the adventure and can enjoy a well-earned meal and rest.

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the lush rainforest toward Momella Gate. Following the demanding summit day, the trail offers a gentler opportunity to appreciate the mountain’s lower slopes and the forest environment once again. Listen for birds among the trees, enjoy the fresh air and look out for wildlife as you pass through the park. The vegetation gradually becomes denser before the route opens into grassland closer to the gate.

At Momella Gate, complete the park formalities and collect your summit certificate, according to your summit result. Your driver will then transfer you back to Arusha, where a hot shower, comfortable accommodation and a relaxed evening await. The climb may be over, but the memories of the rainforest, the dramatic crater ridge and the sunrise from Socialist Peak will remain with you long after you leave the mountain.
