Journey Overview

For those who wish to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers an extraordinary journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. The adventure begins in the western rainforest before climbing onto the vast Shira Plateau, where open moorland and volcanic landscapes reveal sweeping views of Kibo. From there, the trail leaves the more frequently travelled routes behind and follows the remote northern side of the mountain, passing beneath the Lent Hills and across high-altitude terrain with distant views towards Kenya. Each stage reveals a different character of Kilimanjaro, making this route especially rewarding for travellers who value solitude, varied scenery and a more gradual approach to the summit.

With nine days on the mountain, the itinerary allows more time to experience the changing elevations and prepare for the final ascent. The journey passes through alpine desert towards School Hut, where the summit attempt begins during the night. Reaching Uhuru Peak requires endurance, careful pacing and attention to altitude, but standing at 5,895 metres offers a remarkable opportunity to appreciate the scale of Africa’s highest mountain. After the summit attempt, descend towards Millennium Camp before continuing to the park gate. Back to Eden Adventure coordinates the arrangements throughout the journey, allowing you to focus on the mountain, the experience and the achievement of travelling across one of Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive routes.

Day 2: Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp

Into the Ancient Mountain Forest

Day Info: Day 2 — Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa Camp

Activity Title: Entering Kilimanjaro’s Ancient Forest

Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking time: 2–4 hours
Altitude: Londorossi trailhead, approximately 2,100–2,400 m → Mti Mkubwa Camp, approximately 2,780–2,850 m
Habitat: Montane rainforest

After breakfast, leave Moshi and travel towards Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side. Once park registration and other formalities are complete, continue towards the trailhead, where your guide and mountain crew prepare for the first stage. Begin walking beneath a canopy of tall trees, through lush rainforest filled with ferns, moss-covered branches and the calls of forest birds. The path climbs gradually through the vegetation, offering a peaceful introduction to the mountain while the cool forest air makes the early hours particularly pleasant.

Continue towards Mti Mkubwa Camp, whose name means Big Tree Camp. The forest remains a defining feature of this first stage, creating a quiet atmosphere far removed from the busy towns below. Wildlife may occasionally be spotted in the surrounding vegetation, although sightings cannot be guaranteed. On arrival, settle into camp while the crew prepares your meal and sleeping arrangements. Take time to rest, drink water and become familiar with the rhythm of life on the mountain. The climb has begun, and the following stages will take you beyond the forest into increasingly open terrain.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp → Shira 1 Camp

Leaving the Forest for the Shira Plateau

Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: Mti Mkubwa Camp, approximately 2,780–2,850 m → Shira 1 Camp, approximately 3,500 m
Habitat: Montane rainforest, heath and moorland

Leave Mti Mkubwa Camp after breakfast and continue along a trail that gradually climbs away from the rainforest. As you gain elevation, dense trees begin to thin, giving way to tall heather, grasses and other high-altitude vegetation. The terrain becomes more open, and views start to reveal the scale of Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. Cross streams and follow the rising path towards the Shira Ridge before descending gently onto the plateau. The changing scenery offers a memorable transition from the cool forest to the broad highlands above it.

Continue towards Shira 1 Camp, situated beside a stream on the western side of the plateau. The open landscape offers a striking contrast to the forest of the previous night, with expansive views across the surrounding highlands and, when conditions allow, towards Kibo. Your crew will prepare camp and your evening meal while you settle in and recover from the day’s walk. As the altitude increases, pay attention to hydration, appetite and how you feel. The next stage crosses more of the plateau, giving you time to appreciate the landscape while continuing to adapt to the mountain.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 4: Shira 1 Camp → Shira 2 Camp

Across Kilimanjaro's Open Highland Plateau

Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: Shira 1 Camp, approximately 3,500 m → Shira 2 Camp, approximately 3,850 m
Habitat: Heath and moorland

After breakfast, set out across the Shira Plateau, a broad volcanic landscape shaped by Kilimanjaro’s ancient geological history. The trail crosses open moorland, where grasses, heather and unusual high-altitude plants grow among scattered rocks. With fewer trees to interrupt the horizon, the views stretch across the plateau towards Kibo, whose immense slopes dominate the scenery ahead. The route is generally more gradual than the previous day’s climb, allowing you to settle into a steady rhythm and enjoy the mountain’s wide-open spaces.

Arrive at Shira 2 Camp, located in the highland meadows of the plateau. This stage provides an opportunity to continue acclimatising while enjoying a different perspective of Kilimanjaro’s western side. Depending on the weather and your guide’s assessment, a short walk nearby may be possible before returning to camp. Spend the afternoon resting, drinking water and enjoying your meal while your guide monitors how you are adapting to the altitude. The next stage climbs towards Lava Tower before descending to Moir Camp, introducing you to more exposed terrain and an important acclimatisation opportunity.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 5: Shira 2 Camp → Lava Tower → Moir Camp

Climbing High Before Resting Lower

Distance: Approximately 14 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Altitude: Shira 2 Camp, approximately 3,850 m → Lava Tower, approximately 4,600 m → Moir Camp, approximately 4,200 m
Habitat: Moorland and alpine desert

Leave Shira 2 Camp and continue east across the highlands towards Lava Tower and the striking volcanic formation known as Shark’s Tooth. The trail gradually climbs through increasingly barren terrain, with the vegetation becoming shorter as the landscape transitions into alpine desert. Kibo rises prominently ahead while the plateau stretches behind you, creating a dramatic sense of scale. The climb to around 4,600 metres offers an important opportunity for your body to experience a higher elevation before descending to sleep at a lower altitude, a strategy commonly used to support acclimatisation.

After a break near Lava Tower, continue towards Moir Camp, following the route as it descends into the remote Lent Hills area. The landscape is rugged and exposed, with volcanic rock and sparse vegetation defining the surroundings. On arrival, settle into camp and allow yourself time to recover from the day’s longer walk. Your guide will assess your condition and may recommend a suitable acclimatisation walk if conditions permit. Eat well, keep hydrated and dress warmly as temperatures fall. This stage marks the transition from the western plateau towards the quiet northern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 6: Moir Camp → Buffalo Camp

Into Kilimanjaro's Remote Northern Wilderness

Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Altitude: Moir Camp, approximately 4,200 m → Buffalo Camp, approximately 4,020 m
Habitat: High alpine desert

Leave Moir Camp and climb out of the surrounding valley towards the northern side of Kilimanjaro. The trail follows a series of rises and descents across exposed terrain, with volcanic rock, sparse vegetation and wide views defining the landscape. Depending on the route and weather, your guide may offer an optional walk towards Little Lent Hill before rejoining the main trail. As you move farther from the more frequently travelled western approaches, the mountain begins to feel increasingly remote. On clear days, the northern plains stretch towards the Kenya–Tanzania border, creating a dramatic contrast between the high volcanic slopes and the distant lowlands.

Continue along the undulating trail towards Buffalo Camp, situated on the northern slopes of the mountain. Although the overall elevation may decrease slightly, the repeated climbs and descents make this a physically demanding day. On arrival, settle into camp and take in the immense landscape surrounding you. Your guide will continue monitoring your condition and encourage you to maintain a steady pace, drink regularly and eat well. The northern traverse is one of the defining features of this route, offering a quieter perspective of Kilimanjaro and preparing you for the stages ahead.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 7: Buffalo Camp → Third Cave Camp

Following the Mountain's Northern Arc

Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Altitude: Buffalo Camp, approximately 4,020 m → Third Cave Camp, approximately 3,800–3,870 m
Habitat: High alpine desert and moorland

After breakfast, leave Buffalo Camp and climb along the Buffalo Ridge before descending towards the Porfu area, where a rest and lunch break can be arranged. The trail continues east around Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes, crossing open ground with far-reaching views towards the plains below. The landscape is marked by volcanic rock, sparse vegetation and the immense slopes of Kibo rising above the trail. The remoteness of this section offers a sense of solitude that distinguishes the Northern Circuit from more heavily travelled routes.

Continue towards Third Cave Camp, where the trail descends gradually into a sheltered area beneath the northern slopes. Despite the net loss in elevation, the uneven ground and repeated changes in terrain require care and consistent effort. On arrival, settle into camp, enjoy a freshly prepared meal and allow yourself time to recover. Your guide will review the following day’s plan and assess how you are adapting before the route climbs towards School Hut. The Northern Circuit’s gradual progress around the mountain gives you a distinctive perspective of Kilimanjaro while continuing the preparation for summit day.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 8: Third Cave Camp → School Hut

Climbing Towards the Summit Base

Distance: Approximately 5–7 km
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Altitude: Third Cave Camp, approximately 3,800–3,870 m → School Hut, approximately 4,750–4,800 m
Habitat: High moorland and alpine desert

Leave Third Cave Camp and begin the ascent towards the higher slopes of Kibo. The trail gradually climbs across rocky, exposed ground, with vegetation becoming increasingly sparse as you gain elevation. The northern landscape opens around you, revealing the immense volcanic slopes of Kilimanjaro and the rugged profile of Mawenzi in the distance. Although the distance is relatively short compared with some earlier stages, the substantial altitude gain makes it important to move slowly, take regular breaks and pay close attention to how you feel.

Arrive at School Hut, your base for the summit attempt. After settling in, enjoy your meal and listen carefully to your guide’s briefing about the overnight climb, weather conditions and safety procedures. Prepare your warm layers, headlamp, water and essential equipment before resting as much as possible. Sleep may be difficult at this elevation, but conserving energy is important before the most demanding stage of the trek. Your guide will assess the group’s condition and confirm the plan for the summit attempt, with safety taking priority over reaching the peak.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 9: School Hut → Uhuru Peak → Millennium Camp

Reaching the Roof of Africa

Distance: Approximately 6 km ascent to Uhuru Peak, followed by a long descent towards Millennium Camp
Hiking time: Approximately 14–16 hours or longer
Altitude: School Hut, approximately 4,750–4,800 m → Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m → Millennium Camp, approximately 3,800–3,950 m
Habitat: Alpine desert, arctic summit zone and upper moorland

The summit attempt begins during the night, when you leave School Hut with your guide and climb slowly across the upper slopes of Kibo. The trail rises over steep volcanic scree towards Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, where the cold, darkness and altitude make every step demanding. From there, continue along the rim towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres. If the weather allows, the first light of dawn may reveal the glaciers, crater and surrounding mountain landscape in extraordinary detail. Reaching the summit depends on your health, weather, altitude response and the guide’s safety assessment.

After spending a short time at the summit when conditions permit, begin the long descent along the southern slopes, following your guide’s confirmed route towards Millennium Camp. This is an exceptionally demanding day, combining the summit ascent with many hours of downhill walking. As you lose elevation, the landscape gradually changes from exposed volcanic terrain towards the upper moorland. Your guide will manage the pace and monitor the group’s condition throughout the descent, adjusting the plan if required for safety. At camp, enjoy a well-earned meal and rest after the summit attempt. The day’s achievement lies not only in the destination but also in the determination and care required to travel safely across the mountain.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 10: Millennium Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

Descending Through Kilimanjaro's Green Slopes

Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking time: 3–5 hours
Altitude: Millennium Camp, approximately 3,800–3,950 m → Mweka Gate, approximately 1,640 m
Habitat: Moorland and montane rainforest

After breakfast, begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes towards Mweka Gate. The trail passes through changing vegetation, moving from open highland terrain into the cooler, greener forest zone. After the stark landscape near the summit, the return of trees, ferns and forest sounds provides a welcome contrast. The downhill path can be slippery or muddy, particularly after rain, so take care on uneven ground and follow your guide’s pace. Although this is the final trekking stage, your legs may still be tired after the long summit day.

Continue to Mweka Gate, where the trekking team completes the necessary park formalities and summit certificates may be presented to eligible climbers. Meet your transfer and return to Moshi, where a hot shower, a comfortable bed and a proper meal await. During the drive, reflect on the remarkable variety of landscapes you have crossed, from the western rainforest and Shira Plateau to the remote northern slopes and the summit of Kibo. The Northern Circuit concludes with a sense of achievement and memories of a less-travelled side of Kilimanjaro.

Meals: BREAKFAST ONLY
Day 10: Moshi → Airport / Departure

Questions Before You Go

Every journey with Back to Eden Adventures is thoughtfully designed around your interests, pace, and sense of adventure. Here you’ll find answers to the questions our guests often ask about planning, accommodation, activities, logistics, and what to expect along the way. If there’s anything you’re still wondering about, our team is always here to help you plan your journey with confidence.

You are expected to carry your own day pack, with only things which should be able to sustain you until you reach the next camp at the end of the day. You do not need to carry your personal backpack/ duffel pack – It will be carried by our porters.
No worries about that – this is a common concern. It is much better for your body if you proceed slowly and guides will permanently remind you about this (“pole-pole” – which means “slowly slowly”). By walking slowly, your body will much better acclimatize to high altitude. There is plenty of time allocated each day for the treks, even for those who like to go very slowly.
Some climbers may fall short of reaching the summit, but not at the expense of their overall experience. Even for those who never reached the top, the experience of the wonders of Kilimanjaro is very rewarding. If one or more members of the group decide they cannot continue, or if a guide deems it unsafe for an individual (or a group) to continue, they are escorted to the most convenient campsite or Hut. Our guides intimately know the network of shortcuts to escort climbers to safety, and they are trained to act quickly and calmly under any circumstance.
On the Marangu Route, there are simple basic Huts. The first 2 Huts sleep four people each and the last Hut is a dome-style with bunk beds. On all the other routes, you will sleep in 3 dome-style Tents, two people each. The Tents are modern and have an outer flysheet and large vestibules to keep equipment from the elements. They are set up, broken down, and carried- along with everything else- by our porters. There are public toilets set up at every campsite, but portable toilets are available upon request at the cost of $ 100 per group for the whole tour. Hot water is provided for each person every morning but No showers during the trek There will be dining tents with chairs and tables where all meals will be served. Before any meal, we will provide soap and hot water for washing your hands.
For each trek on the Mount a dedicated cook will be part of the logistical team. They are professional chefs and can prepare different kinds of dishes. Please see a sample page for Dietary Menu.
You shouldn’t worry- You are in safe hands. Our guides are professionally trained to handle all sorts of distress and respond quickly and accordingly. They all have Wilderness First Aid Responder qualification and they will all time bring you to safety. They will directly call for an emergency evacuation if the situation worsens.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 9 Days Northern Circuit

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 8 Days Northern Circuit

For travellers who want to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its most familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers a remarkable journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. Beginning on the western side, the route passes through lush rainforest and across the expansive Shira Plateau before reaching remote valleys beneath the rugged Lent Hills. As the landscape changes from dense forest to open moorland and high alpine desert, the mountain reveals new perspectives at every stage. The northern traverse is especially rewarding, offering expansive views towards Kenya, dramatic volcanic scenery and a sense of solitude that makes this route distinct from the busier approaches.

The journey gradually leads towards the eastern side of Kibo before turning towards the summit. With several days spent exploring different elevations and landscapes, the Northern Circuit provides valuable opportunities for acclimatisation, although altitude sickness remains a risk and summit success is never guaranteed. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak is demanding, requiring patience, determination and careful guidance from your mountain team. After the summit attempt, descend through the southern slopes to Mweka Camp and continue to the park gate the following day. Back to Eden Adventure takes care of the arrangements so you can concentrate on the experience, the changing scenery and the extraordinary achievement of climbing Africa’s highest mountain.
