Journey Overview

There is something special about approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from its quieter northern slopes. Far from the busier trails, the Rongai Route leads through cultivated countryside, peaceful forest and open moorland, gradually revealing the mountain’s immense scale. Along the way, views stretch towards Kenya, while Mawenzi Peak rises dramatically above the landscape with its jagged ridges and rugged rock formations. Each camp offers a new perspective, making this route a rewarding experience for travellers seeking both adventure and a deeper connection with the mountain.

Your ascent continues across the high-altitude Saddle towards Kibo Hut, where the final climb to Uhuru Peak begins under the night sky. Reaching Africa’s highest point is a demanding challenge that calls for patience, determination and careful attention to acclimatisation. After the summit attempt, descend through the southern slopes via the Marangu Route, experiencing a different side of Kilimanjaro before returning to Moshi. Back to Eden Adventure takes care of the journey’s arrangements, allowing you to focus on each step, the changing scenery and the extraordinary achievement of climbing this iconic mountain.

Meet your mountain guide for a pre-climb briefing covering the route, daily hiking expectations, altitude awareness and essential safety procedures. Together, review your personal trekking equipment to make sure you have the appropriate clothing, footwear and accessories for changing conditions on Kilimanjaro. Any missing items can be identified and arranged for hire, helping ensure that you are properly equipped before leaving Moshi.

Your guide will also explain how the mountain crew supports the trek, what to expect at each camp and how to manage your pace as the altitude increases. Day 2: Rongai Gate → Simba Camp

Into Kilimanjaro's Quiet Northern Forest

Distance: Approximately 6–8 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Rongai Gate, approximately 1,950 m → Simba Camp, approximately 2,625–2,650 m
Habitat: Farmland and montane forest

After breakfast, travel from Moshi towards the Rongai trailhead near the Kenyan border, passing through villages, cultivated fields and rural landscapes. Following registration and the necessary park formalities, begin your hike through farmland and into the mountain’s northern forest. The trail climbs gradually beneath trees and through quieter woodland, where birdsong and the sounds of nature accompany your first steps on Kilimanjaro. Compared with some of the busier southern approaches, the Rongai Route often offers a more peaceful beginning to the climb.

Continue at a steady pace towards Simba Camp, situated near the upper edge of the forest zone. As the vegetation begins to thin, the landscape opens to wider views across the northern plains, and the air gradually becomes cooler. Your mountain crew will prepare camp and your evening meal while you settle in after the first day of hiking. Take time to hydrate, eat well and rest, allowing your body to begin adapting to the altitude before the trail climbs higher the following day.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 3: Simba Camp → Second Cave

Climbing into the Open Moorlands

Distance: Approximately 6–8 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Simba Camp, approximately 2,625–2,650 m → Second Cave, approximately 3,450 m
Habitat: Heathland and moorland

Leave Simba Camp after breakfast and continue climbing through the changing landscapes of Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes. The trail gradually leaves the forest behind, opening into broad moorland with low-growing plants, grasses and scattered shrubs. As you gain height, the surroundings become more expansive, and the views towards Kibo and Mawenzi begin to reveal the scale of the mountain. With fewer trees to interrupt the horizon, the landscape feels increasingly open and remote.

Arrive at Second Cave, a high-altitude campsite surrounded by open terrain and dramatic mountain scenery. After settling in, enjoy the opportunity to rest and take in the views, particularly when the clouds lift around Kibo’s upper slopes. Your guide will continue monitoring how you are adapting to the increasing elevation and remind you to drink water regularly and report any symptoms of altitude sickness. A calm evening and a good meal prepare you for the next stage towards the remote valleys beneath Mawenzi.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 4: Second Cave → Kikelewa Camp

Across the Highlands Beneath Mawenzi

Distance: Approximately 5–9 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Second Cave, approximately 3,450 m → Kikelewa Camp, approximately 3,600–3,630 m
Habitat: Moorland and high-altitude heath

After breakfast, leave Second Cave and continue across the open northern slopes, following a trail that gradually brings the rugged form of Mawenzi Peak into clearer view. The vegetation becomes more sparse as you move through the high moorland, where unusual mountain plants grow among grasses, rocks and exposed ground. With fewer trees to interrupt the horizon, the scenery feels increasingly vast, and the changing light across Kilimanjaro’s peaks gives the day a distinctive sense of remoteness.

Continue towards Kikelewa Camp, located in a sheltered valley beneath Mawenzi’s dramatic slopes. The surrounding landscape offers a striking contrast between the open plateau and the steep, jagged rock formations rising above it. Depending on the weather, you may enjoy expansive views across the mountain’s northern and eastern sides before the evening clouds gather. Once at camp, take time to rest, enjoy a freshly prepared meal and prepare for the next climb. Maintaining a slow, consistent pace remains essential as you approach higher elevations.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 5: Kikelewa Camp → Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Beneath the Jagged Peaks of Mawenzi

Distance: Approximately 5–6 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Kikelewa Camp, approximately 3,600–3,630 m → Mawenzi Tarn Camp, approximately 4,330 m
Habitat: Alpine heath and high-altitude semi-desert

Today’s trail climbs more noticeably as you leave Kikelewa Camp and ascend grassy slopes towards the dramatic highlands beneath Mawenzi Peak. The route is shorter than some previous stages, but the increasing altitude makes it important to walk slowly and avoid rushing. As you climb, the vegetation becomes smaller and more scattered, revealing a rugged landscape of volcanic rock and open mountain terrain. Mawenzi’s sharp ridges rise above the trail, creating one of the most distinctive mountain settings along the Rongai Route.

Reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp, spectacularly positioned in a natural basin beneath the towering rock formations of Mawenzi. The surrounding scenery feels wild and remote, with steep slopes, rocky ridgelines and broad views across the high-altitude landscape. Depending on the itinerary and your guide’s assessment, the afternoon may be used for rest or a short acclimatisation walk before returning to camp. Spend the evening eating well, drinking regularly and preparing for the crossing towards Kibo Hut. This is a memorable stop where the mountain’s scale and solitude become especially apparent.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Camp → Kibo Hut

Crossing the Vast Saddle to Kibo

Distance: Approximately 8–10 km
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Altitude: Mawenzi Tarn Camp, approximately 4,330 m → Kibo Hut, approximately 4,700 m
Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, leave Mawenzi Tarn and cross the broad, exposed landscape known as the Saddle, which stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail moves through an increasingly barren world where vegetation becomes scarce and volcanic ground dominates the scenery. The immense slopes of Kibo gradually draw closer as you cross this high-altitude plateau, while Mawenzi’s rugged towers recede behind you. The terrain can feel stark and otherworldly, with wide skies, changing light and an extraordinary sense of space.

Continue towards Kibo Hut, situated at the base of Kibo’s upper slopes. Upon arrival, settle in, enjoy your meal and listen carefully to your guide’s instructions for the summit attempt. The evening is deliberately quiet, with time to rest and prepare your clothing, headlamp, water and essential equipment before the night climb. You will usually be asked to sleep early before an overnight start, although altitude and anticipation can make rest difficult. Keep warm, follow your guide’s advice and conserve your energy for the demanding ascent ahead.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 7: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Reaching the Roof of Africa

Distance: Approximately 5–6 km ascent to Uhuru Peak, followed by a long descent to Horombo Hut; total distance varies by route and conditions
Hiking time: Approximately 12–16 hours or longer
Altitude: Kibo Hut, approximately 4,700 m → Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m → Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m
Habitat: Alpine desert, arctic summit zone and high moorland

The summit attempt begins during the night, when you leave Kibo Hut under a sky filled with stars, guided by your experienced mountain team. The trail climbs steeply over volcanic scree towards Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, demanding patience, concentration and a slow, controlled pace. From there, continue along the rim towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres. As dawn approaches, the first light may illuminate the surrounding glaciers and the immense crater landscape, creating a powerful moment after hours of determined effort. Reaching the summit depends on your health, weather, altitude response and the guide’s safety assessment.

After celebrating briefly at Uhuru Peak and taking photographs when conditions permit, begin the descent towards Kibo Hut before continuing down to Horombo Hut, according to the guide’s assessment and the group’s condition. This is an exceptionally long and physically demanding day, combining the summit ascent with a substantial descent. Your guide will set a safe pace and may adjust the plan if conditions require it. At Horombo Hut, enjoy a well-earned meal and rest after the effort of the summit. Whether you reach the summit or turn back for safety, the day’s achievement lies in respecting the mountain and the journey you have undertaken.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 8: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Moshi

Descending Through Kilimanjaro's Changing Landscapes

Distance: Approximately 18–20 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Altitude: Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m → Marangu Gate, approximately 1,860 m
Habitat: Moorland and montane rainforest

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro’s broad moorland slopes. The trail gradually loses altitude, and the landscape changes as you pass through familiar highland vegetation towards the cooler, greener lower mountain. After the stark terrain near the summit, the return of grasses, shrubs and eventually forest brings a welcome change in scenery. Take care on the downhill sections, as tired legs can make uneven ground more challenging, and follow your guide’s pace throughout the descent.

Continue to Marangu Gate, where the mountain trek concludes and summit certificates may be presented to eligible climbers. After completing the necessary park formalities, meet your transfer and return to Moshi. The drive offers time to reflect on the different landscapes you have crossed, from the quiet northern forest to the exposed Saddle and the high slopes of Kibo. Back at your hotel, enjoy a hot shower, a proper meal and a comfortable bed. Your Rongai adventure comes to a close with the memories of the mountain and the effort it took to explore it.

Questions Before You Go

Every journey with Back to Eden Adventures is thoughtfully designed around your interests, pace, and sense of adventure. Here you’ll find answers to the questions our guests often ask about planning, accommodation, activities, logistics, and what to expect along the way. If there’s anything you’re still wondering about, our team is always here to help you plan your journey with confidence.

You are expected to carry your own day pack, with only things which should be able to sustain you until you reach the next camp at the end of the day. You do not need to carry your personal backpack/ duffel pack – It will be carried by our porters.
No worries about that – this is a common concern. It is much better for your body if you proceed slowly and guides will permanently remind you about this (“pole-pole” – which means “slowly slowly”). By walking slowly, your body will much better acclimatize to high altitude. There is plenty of time allocated each day for the treks, even for those who like to go very slowly.
Some climbers may fall short of reaching the summit, but not at the expense of their overall experience. Even for those who never reached the top, the experience of the wonders of Kilimanjaro is very rewarding. If one or more members of the group decide they cannot continue, or if a guide deems it unsafe for an individual (or a group) to continue, they are escorted to the most convenient campsite or Hut. Our guides intimately know the network of shortcuts to escort climbers to safety, and they are trained to act quickly and calmly under any circumstance.
On the Marangu Route, there are simple basic Huts. The first 2 Huts sleep four people each and the last Hut is a dome-style with bunk beds. On all the other routes, you will sleep in 3 dome-style Tents, two people each. The Tents are modern and have an outer flysheet and large vestibules to keep equipment from the elements. They are set up, broken down, and carried- along with everything else- by our porters. There are public toilets set up at every campsite, but portable toilets are available upon request at the cost of $ 100 per group for the whole tour. Hot water is provided for each person every morning but No showers during the trek There will be dining tents with chairs and tables where all meals will be served. Before any meal, we will provide soap and hot water for washing your hands.
For each trek on the Mount a dedicated cook will be part of the logistical team. They are professional chefs and can prepare different kinds of dishes. Please see a sample page for Dietary Menu.
You shouldn’t worry- You are in safe hands. Our guides are professionally trained to handle all sorts of distress and respond quickly and accordingly. They all have Wilderness First Aid Responder qualification and they will all time bring you to safety. They will directly call for an emergency evacuation if the situation worsens.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 9 Days Northern Circuit

For those who wish to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers an extraordinary journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. The adventure begins in the western rainforest before climbing onto the vast Shira Plateau, where open moorland and volcanic landscapes reveal sweeping views of Kibo. From there, the trail leaves the more frequently travelled routes behind and follows the remote northern side of the mountain, passing beneath the Lent Hills and across high-altitude terrain with distant views towards Kenya. Each stage reveals a different character of Kilimanjaro, making this route especially rewarding for travellers who value solitude, varied scenery and a more gradual approach to the summit.

With nine days on the mountain, the itinerary allows more time to experience the changing elevations and prepare for the final ascent. The journey passes through alpine desert towards School Hut, where the summit attempt begins during the night. Reaching Uhuru Peak requires endurance, careful pacing and attention to altitude, but standing at 5,895 metres offers a remarkable opportunity to appreciate the scale of Africa’s highest mountain. After the summit attempt, descend towards Millennium Camp before continuing to the park gate. Back to Eden Adventure coordinates the arrangements throughout the journey, allowing you to focus on the mountain, the experience and the achievement of travelling across one of Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive routes.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 8 Days Northern Circuit

For travellers who want to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its most familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers a remarkable journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. Beginning on the western side, the route passes through lush rainforest and across the expansive Shira Plateau before reaching remote valleys beneath the rugged Lent Hills. As the landscape changes from dense forest to open moorland and high alpine desert, the mountain reveals new perspectives at every stage. The northern traverse is especially rewarding, offering expansive views towards Kenya, dramatic volcanic scenery and a sense of solitude that makes this route distinct from the busier approaches.

The journey gradually leads towards the eastern side of Kibo before turning towards the summit. With several days spent exploring different elevations and landscapes, the Northern Circuit provides valuable opportunities for acclimatisation, although altitude sickness remains a risk and summit success is never guaranteed. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak is demanding, requiring patience, determination and careful guidance from your mountain team. After the summit attempt, descend through the southern slopes to Mweka Camp and continue to the park gate the following day. Back to Eden Adventure takes care of the arrangements so you can concentrate on the experience, the changing scenery and the extraordinary achievement of climbing Africa’s highest mountain.
