Journey Overview

Mount Kilimanjaro is a mountain of remarkable contrasts, rising from lush tropical forest into open moorland, stark alpine desert and a summit shaped by ice and volcanic rock. The Machame Route brings these environments together in one unforgettable climb, taking you across the Shira Plateau, beneath the towering Barranco Wall and towards the glaciers surrounding Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

This seven-day mountain itinerary balances challenging hiking with valuable opportunities to adjust to the altitude, including the ascent to Lava Tower followed by a descent to Barranco Camp. Before the climb begins, an additional day in Moshi allows you to check your equipment, hire any missing gear and prepare with your mountain team. With experienced guides, a dedicated support crew and a steady approach to each stage, Back to Eden Adventure helps you experience Kilimanjaro with preparation, determination and respect for the mountain.

Your Signature Journey

Your journey with Back to Eden Adventures is designed around you. The itinerary below offers a glimpse of what your safari could look like, thoughtfully crafted to inspire a private journey tailored to your interests, pace, and preferences.

Arrival Day

Welcome to the Foot of Kilimanjaro

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your private transfer will meet you and take you to your hotel in Moshi, a lively town nestled beneath the slopes of Kilimanjaro. After checking in, take time to settle into your room, rest after your travels and enjoy your first views of the region. On a clear day, the mountain may appear above the surrounding landscape, offering an early glimpse of the adventure ahead.

Your climb begins with preparation rather than rushing straight onto the trail. The evening is an opportunity to relax, enjoy a meal and prepare for your equipment check the following day. Your team will also help you understand the arrangements for the climb, leaving you with time to ask questions and become comfortable with the experience ahead.

Day 1: Moshi

Ready for the Climb — Equipment and Preparation

Today is dedicated to checking your hiking equipment, fitting essential gear and arranging any necessary hires. Your team will review your hiking boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, insulated jacket, trekking poles, headlamp, sleeping bag and daypack. Correctly fitting equipment helps reduce discomfort on long hiking days, while suitable warm clothing is particularly important for the freezing conditions possible near the summit.

You will also attend a pre-climb briefing covering the Machame Route, daily walking schedules, camp arrangements, hydration, nutrition and altitude awareness. Your guide will explain the importance of a slow walking pace and reporting symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Once your equipment is checked and your bags are organised, enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Tomorrow, you leave Moshi for the mountain’s southern slopes.

Explore Experience
Day 2: Machame Gate → Machame Camp

Through the Green Heart of Kilimanjaro

Distance: Approximately 11 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Altitude: Machame Gate, approximately 1,800 m → Machame Camp, approximately 2,835–3,010 m
Habitat: Montane rainforest

After breakfast, travel from Moshi to Machame Gate, where your guide completes park registration and the mountain crew prepares for the climb. Once the formalities are complete, begin hiking along a winding forest trail that gradually climbs the mountain’s southern slopes. The rainforest is rich with moss-covered trees, ferns and tangled roots, while birdsong and the movement of forest life create a peaceful atmosphere around the trail. Following rain, sections can be muddy and slippery, so waterproof footwear and trekking poles are useful.

Continue uphill through the forest towards Machame Camp, where the vegetation begins to thin as you approach the upper edge of the rainforest zone. Your crew will prepare camp and a warm evening meal while you settle in after your first day of hiking. Take time to drink water, eat well and rest, as the following day brings a climb into more open terrain. The mountain is now your world for the days ahead, and maintaining a comfortable pace from the beginning is essential.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 3: Machame Camp → Shira Camp

Above the Forest, Across the Open Highlands

Distance: Approximately 5 km
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Altitude: Machame Camp, approximately 2,835–3,010 m → Shira Camp, approximately 3,750–3,840 m
Habitat: Heath and moorland

Leave Machame Camp after breakfast and follow a steadily ascending trail away from the rainforest. The path becomes rockier as you climb a ridge covered in heather and other high-altitude vegetation. With fewer trees around you, the views begin to open across the mountain’s slopes, revealing a sense of the scale and remoteness of Kilimanjaro. The shorter distance does not mean the day is effortless, as the elevation gain makes it important to walk slowly and take regular breaks.

Continue towards the Shira Plateau, an expansive volcanic landscape where the vegetation is shorter and the horizon stretches towards Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s highest cone. Arrive at Shira Camp and settle in while your crew prepares your meal and sleeping arrangements. The open surroundings offer a striking contrast to the forest of the previous day. Your guide will continue monitoring how you are adjusting to the altitude before tomorrow’s longer stage towards Lava Tower and Barranco Camp.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 4: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Climbing Higher, Learning to Adapt

Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Altitude: Shira Camp, approximately 3,750–3,840 m → Lava Tower, approximately 4,630 m → Barranco Camp, approximately 3,960 m
Habitat: Alpine moorland and semi-desert

Today takes you east across the high mountain terrain towards Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation standing above the surrounding landscape. The route climbs through rocky ground and sparse vegetation, with the air growing thinner as you approach approximately 4,630 metres. Your guide will maintain a measured pace and schedule breaks to help you manage the ascent. The broad views across Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes make this a remarkable stage, but your wellbeing remains more important than reaching any particular point.

After spending time in the Lava Tower area, descend towards Barranco Camp, situated in a dramatic valley beneath steep mountain walls. This “climb high, sleep low” approach is an important part of the route’s acclimatisation strategy, exposing your body to a higher elevation before you sleep lower. As you descend, look for giant groundsels and other distinctive high-altitude plants growing among the rocky slopes. Arrive at camp for dinner and rest, preparing for the famous Barranco Wall the next morning.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

The Barranco Wall — A Test of Nerve and Balance

Distance: Approximately 5 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: Barranco Camp, approximately 3,960 m → Karanga Camp, approximately 4,035 m
Habitat: Alpine desert

Begin the day with the ascent of the Barranco Wall, one of the most memorable sections of the Machame Route. From camp, the rocky wall rises steeply above the valley, requiring careful foot placement and occasional use of your hands for balance. It is not a technical rock-climbing route, but some sections are exposed, and your guide will help you move confidently and safely. As you gain height, the views across the surrounding ridges and towards Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes become increasingly impressive.

Beyond the wall, continue across a series of ridges and valleys before descending towards Karanga Valley and climbing to Karanga Camp. Although the day’s distance is relatively short, the terrain calls for concentration and a steady rhythm. This overnight stop gives you additional time to rest and adjust before the ascent to Barafu Camp. After arriving, enjoy a warm meal, replenish fluids and spend the evening preparing for the next stage of your climb.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 6: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

The Last Camp Before the Summit

Distance: Approximately 4 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Karanga Camp, approximately 4,035 m → Barafu Camp, approximately 4,640–4,673 m
Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, continue uphill across rocky slopes to Barafu Camp, the high camp where the summit attempt begins. The route is relatively short, but the altitude makes every step more demanding. The surrounding landscape is stark and exposed, with sparse vegetation, loose stones and wide views towards the mountain’s summit region. Your guide will encourage you to walk slowly, drink regularly and take breaks whenever needed.

Arrive at Barafu Camp with time to eat, organise your summit clothing and headlamp, and listen to the final briefing. Your guide will explain the planned departure, pacing, safety procedures and what to expect during the long ascent in darkness. After an early dinner, you’ll try to rest before the late-night start, usually around midnight. This is the moment to conserve your energy and prepare mentally for the most physically demanding part of the expedition.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 7: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Uhuru Peak — Reaching the Highest Point in Africa

Distance: Approximately 5 km ascent and 12 km descent
Hiking time: Around 7–8 hours to the summit, followed by approximately 4–6 hours descending
Altitude: Barafu Camp, approximately 4,673 m → Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m → Mweka Camp, approximately 3,100 m
Habitat: Alpine desert, summit terrain and upper rainforest

The summit attempt begins during the night, as you set out beneath the stars and climb slowly over steep scree and rocky ground towards Stella Point on the crater rim. The darkness, cold and thin air make this a challenging ascent, both physically and mentally. Your guides will establish a careful rhythm, monitor your condition and provide breaks as needed. Reaching Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres is a significant milestone, and, weather permitting, the sunrise may reveal the surrounding glaciers and the vast volcanic landscape.

From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. Take a moment to appreciate the achievement and photograph the summit when conditions permit. Reaching the peak cannot be guaranteed, and your guide may adjust or stop the ascent if safety requires it. After the summit attempt, descend towards Barafu before continuing down to Mweka Camp. The long descent can be tiring on the legs, so use trekking poles and maintain careful footing. At camp, enjoy dinner and a well-earned rest after a demanding day on the mountain.

Meals: BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER
Day 8: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

Down Through the Forest, Back to Comfort

Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Mweka Camp, approximately 3,100 m → Mweka Gate, approximately 1,640 m
Habitat: Upper forest and montane rainforest

After breakfast, begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro’s forested slopes towards Mweka Gate. The return of thicker vegetation, warmer air and the sounds of the rainforest offers a welcome change after the summit’s cold and exposed terrain. The trail can be muddy or slippery, particularly after rain, so continue carefully and use your trekking poles where helpful. Your mountain crew will accompany you through the final section of the trek.

At Mweka Gate, complete the park formalities and receive your summit certificate if you reached the relevant summit point. Say farewell to the guides and support crew who have helped you throughout the expedition before meeting your transfer back to Moshi. Once at your hotel, enjoy a shower, a satisfying meal and time to relax. The climb is complete, leaving you with memories of the rainforest, the Shira Plateau, the Barranco Wall and the effort it took to approach Africa’s highest summit.

Questions Before You Go

Every journey with Back to Eden Adventures is thoughtfully designed around your interests, pace, and sense of adventure. Here you’ll find answers to the questions our guests often ask about planning, accommodation, activities, logistics, and what to expect along the way. If there’s anything you’re still wondering about, our team is always here to help you plan your journey with confidence.

You are expected to carry your own day pack, with only things which should be able to sustain you until you reach the next camp at the end of the day. You do not need to carry your personal backpack/ duffel pack – It will be carried by our porters.
No worries about that – this is a common concern. It is much better for your body if you proceed slowly and guides will permanently remind you about this (“pole-pole” – which means “slowly slowly”). By walking slowly, your body will much better acclimatize to high altitude. There is plenty of time allocated each day for the treks, even for those who like to go very slowly.
Some climbers may fall short of reaching the summit, but not at the expense of their overall experience. Even for those who never reached the top, the experience of the wonders of Kilimanjaro is very rewarding. If one or more members of the group decide they cannot continue, or if a guide deems it unsafe for an individual (or a group) to continue, they are escorted to the most convenient campsite or Hut. Our guides intimately know the network of shortcuts to escort climbers to safety, and they are trained to act quickly and calmly under any circumstance.
On the Marangu Route, there are simple basic Huts. The first 2 Huts sleep four people each and the last Hut is a dome-style with bunk beds. On all the other routes, you will sleep in 3 dome-style Tents, two people each. The Tents are modern and have an outer flysheet and large vestibules to keep equipment from the elements. They are set up, broken down, and carried- along with everything else- by our porters. There are public toilets set up at every campsite, but portable toilets are available upon request at the cost of $ 100 per group for the whole tour. Hot water is provided for each person every morning but No showers during the trek There will be dining tents with chairs and tables where all meals will be served. Before any meal, we will provide soap and hot water for washing your hands.
For each trek on the Mount a dedicated cook will be part of the logistical team. They are professional chefs and can prepare different kinds of dishes. Please see a sample page for Dietary Menu.
You shouldn’t worry- You are in safe hands. Our guides are professionally trained to handle all sorts of distress and respond quickly and accordingly. They all have Wilderness First Aid Responder qualification and they will all time bring you to safety. They will directly call for an emergency evacuation if the situation worsens.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 9 Days Northern Circuit

For those who wish to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers an extraordinary journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. The adventure begins in the western rainforest before climbing onto the vast Shira Plateau, where open moorland and volcanic landscapes reveal sweeping views of Kibo. From there, the trail leaves the more frequently travelled routes behind and follows the remote northern side of the mountain, passing beneath the Lent Hills and across high-altitude terrain with distant views towards Kenya. Each stage reveals a different character of Kilimanjaro, making this route especially rewarding for travellers who value solitude, varied scenery and a more gradual approach to the summit.

With nine days on the mountain, the itinerary allows more time to experience the changing elevations and prepare for the final ascent. The journey passes through alpine desert towards School Hut, where the summit attempt begins during the night. Reaching Uhuru Peak requires endurance, careful pacing and attention to altitude, but standing at 5,895 metres offers a remarkable opportunity to appreciate the scale of Africa’s highest mountain. After the summit attempt, descend towards Millennium Camp before continuing to the park gate. Back to Eden Adventure coordinates the arrangements throughout the journey, allowing you to focus on the mountain, the experience and the achievement of travelling across one of Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive routes.

Kilimanjaro Hiking – 8 Days Northern Circuit

For travellers who want to experience Kilimanjaro beyond its most familiar trails, the Northern Circuit offers a remarkable journey around the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. Beginning on the western side, the route passes through lush rainforest and across the expansive Shira Plateau before reaching remote valleys beneath the rugged Lent Hills. As the landscape changes from dense forest to open moorland and high alpine desert, the mountain reveals new perspectives at every stage. The northern traverse is especially rewarding, offering expansive views towards Kenya, dramatic volcanic scenery and a sense of solitude that makes this route distinct from the busier approaches.

The journey gradually leads towards the eastern side of Kibo before turning towards the summit. With several days spent exploring different elevations and landscapes, the Northern Circuit provides valuable opportunities for acclimatisation, although altitude sickness remains a risk and summit success is never guaranteed. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak is demanding, requiring patience, determination and careful guidance from your mountain team. After the summit attempt, descend through the southern slopes to Mweka Camp and continue to the park gate the following day. Back to Eden Adventure takes care of the arrangements so you can concentrate on the experience, the changing scenery and the extraordinary achievement of climbing Africa’s highest mountain.
