Where flamingos meet the sacred mountain

Set beneath the dramatic presence of Ol Doinyo Lengai, Lake Natron is one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary and otherworldly landscapes. Its shallow alkaline waters attract vast numbers of lesser flamingos, while the surrounding volcanic terrain, rugged escarpments, and open plains create a wilderness unlike anywhere else in northern Tanzania. From flamingo-filled shores and volcanic landscapes to waterfalls, Maasai culture, and guided walks through the surrounding wilderness, Lake Natron offers a deeply authentic adventure with Back to Eden Adventure.

Overview

In the remote northern reaches of Tanzania lies Lake Natron, a striking alkaline lake surrounded by volcanic landscapes and dramatic mountains. The lake sits within the Great Rift Valley and is overlooked by Ol Doinyo Lengai, Tanzania’s active volcano and a sacred mountain to the Maasai. Its mineral-rich waters, changing colors, and expansive mudflats create an almost surreal landscape, while the surrounding wilderness remains wonderfully untouched. Far from the busier safari routes, Lake Natron offers travelers the chance to experience a raw and powerful side of Tanzania.

A sanctuary for flamingos

Lake Natron is one of the most important breeding grounds for lesser flamingos in East Africa. During suitable conditions, enormous flocks gather around the shallow waters and mudflats, creating one of the most spectacular wildlife scenes in the region. The lake’s highly alkaline environment makes it difficult for many animals to survive, but flamingos are specially adapted to these conditions. Their pink silhouettes against the reflective waters and volcanic surroundings create an unforgettable sight, particularly in the soft light of early morning. Beyond the lake, the surrounding plains support other wildlife and bird species adapted to this rugged environment.

Beneath the mountain of God

The presence of Ol Doinyo Lengai gives Lake Natron an extraordinary sense of place. Known as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai, the active volcano rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape. Travelers can explore the area on guided walks, visit waterfalls hidden within nearby gorges, or discover traditional Maasai communities and learn about their connection to the land. The journey to Lake Natron is as much about the landscape and culture as it is about wildlife. With Back to Eden Adventure, a visit here becomes an opportunity to step away from the familiar safari routes and experience one of Tanzania’s most remote and remarkable destinations.

When to Go

Best time to Visit Lake Natron

Lake Natron can be visited throughout much of the year, but the best time depends on your interests. The dry season generally offers clearer conditions for exploring the landscape and hiking, while the period when flamingos gather around the lake can provide exceptional birdwatching opportunities. The region can be hot and rugged, so early-morning activities are particularly rewarding.

The beginning of the year can offer excellent opportunities to see lesser flamingos around Lake Natron, while the surrounding landscape remains striking beneath the clear skies and volcanic mountains. Early mornings are ideal for exploring the lake and surrounding areas before temperatures rise. The combination of flamingos, volcanic scenery, and the presence of Ol Doinyo Lengai creates a uniquely memorable experience.

The rains bring a refreshing change to the normally dry landscapes around Lake Natron. Vegetation becomes greener, seasonal streams and waterfalls can become more impressive, and the surrounding mountains often appear beneath dramatic skies. Access can be more challenging after heavy rainfall, but travelers who make the journey during this period are rewarded with a quieter and beautifully transformed landscape.

The dry season is one of the most popular periods for exploring Lake Natron. Clearer weather creates excellent conditions for hiking, walking around the lake, and visiting nearby waterfalls. The dry landscape provides striking contrasts with the mineral-rich waters, while early mornings offer comfortable conditions for outdoor activities. For adventurous travelers seeking dramatic scenery and a destination away from the main safari routes, these months are particularly rewarding.

The short rains begin to bring fresh vegetation back to the surrounding plains and volcanic landscape. The changing conditions can create beautiful reflections and dramatic skies over the lake, while birdlife remains an important attraction. This quieter period offers a different perspective of Lake Natron, combining its raw volcanic character with the freshness of a landscape beginning to awaken again.

FROM OUR EXPERT

Top Experience

At Back to Eden Adventures, we believe the best journeys are about the moments you remember. Experience the beauty of Tanzania, from its wild landscapes and incredible wildlife to its rich culture and warm people. Discover, explore, and create memories that stay with you long after your journey ends.

Engare Sero Waterfall Hike

Hidden within the dramatic landscapes around Lake Natron, the Engare Sero Waterfall offers a refreshing adventure through a beautiful Rift Valley setting. The hike follows a natural river gorge, taking you between volcanic rock formations, lush vegetation, and flowing streams before reaching the cool waters of the waterfall. The journey is as much about the walk as the waterfall itself. Following the river, you move through a landscape that feels surprisingly green against the dry surroundings of Lake Natron. Along the way, the changing scenery and the sound of flowing water create a peaceful contrast to the dramatic volcanic environment. At the waterfall, there is time to cool off, swim, and enjoy the natural surroundings before making your way back. The experience also offers an opportunity to connect with the local Maasai communities who live around Lake Natron. With a local guide leading the way, the hike brings together nature, culture, and adventure in a simple but memorable experience that complements a safari through northern Tanzania.

Oldoinyo Lengai Mt. Hiking

Rising dramatically from the Great Rift Valley, Ol Doinyo Lengai is one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary mountains. Known as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai, this active volcano stands at 2,962 metres and offers a challenging ascent unlike any other mountain experience in northern Tanzania. The climb begins in the darkness, usually in the early hours of the morning, as you make your way up the steep volcanic slopes beneath a sky filled with stars. As the first light appears, the surrounding Rift Valley slowly comes into view, revealing vast landscapes stretching towards Lake Natron, the Ngorongoro Highlands, and distant volcanic peaks. Reaching the summit at sunrise creates a powerful sense of achievement and one of the most unforgettable views in Tanzania. Ol Doinyo Lengai is more than a mountain climb. It is an opportunity to experience the raw power of an active volcano and connect with a landscape that holds deep cultural significance for the Maasai people. For adventurous travellers, the experience offers a rare combination of physical challenge, dramatic scenery, volcanic geology, and cultural meaning.

Photographic Safari Experience

Tanzania offers endless moments worth capturing, from lions resting beneath acacia trees and elephants crossing open plains to colourful birds, dramatic landscapes, and golden sunsets over the wilderness. A photographic safari gives you the time and space to observe these moments closely and capture them through your own perspective. Across Tanzania's national parks, conservation areas, and diverse landscapes, every journey brings new opportunities to create images that tell the story of your adventure. With Back to Eden Adventure, your safari journey is guided by professional photographic safari guides who understand both wildlife and the art of capturing it. You also travel in specially designed safari vehicles suited for photography, giving you better opportunities to position yourself for wildlife sightings, enjoy clear viewing angles, and photograph comfortably throughout the day. Whether you are using professional camera equipment, a compact camera, or a smartphone, your guide helps you make the most of every opportunity while giving you time to observe without rushing. The most meaningful photographs are often created in moments that cannot be planned—the golden light of sunrise, a herd moving across the savannah, a bird taking flight, or a quiet wildlife encounter that lasts only a few seconds. A photographic safari allows you to slow down, watch carefully, and become part of the moment before capturing it. Whether photography is your passion or simply a way to preserve the memories of your safari, Tanzania provides an extraordinary setting for creating photographs you will treasure long after your journey.

Maasai Cultural Experience

Step beyond the landscapes and wildlife of Tanzania and discover the people, traditions, and stories that have shaped life across East Africa for generations. A Maasai cultural experience offers an opportunity to spend meaningful time with Maasai communities, learn about their traditional way of life, and experience a culture that remains deeply connected to land, family, livestock, and community. From traditional homes and daily customs to music, dance, clothing, and storytelling, every encounter offers a glimpse into a living culture rather than something simply displayed for visitors. With Back to Eden Adventure, cultural experiences are arranged with respect, authenticity, and genuine human connection at their heart. Depending on the community and location, you may meet local Maasai families, learn about their traditional homes and livestock, hear stories passed down through generations, and discover the significance behind their distinctive clothing, jewellery, songs, and dances. Your local guide helps create meaningful conversations and provides context, allowing you to understand the traditions you encounter while giving the community space to share its culture in its own way. What makes a Maasai cultural experience truly memorable is the human connection. Sharing a conversation, listening to stories, learning a traditional song, or simply sitting together and seeing the world through another perspective can become one of the most meaningful moments of a Tanzania safari. Back to Eden Adventure believes that travelling is not only about seeing beautiful places, but also about meeting people and understanding the cultures that give those places their soul. This experience offers a chance to leave Tanzania with more than photographs—with stories, connections, and a deeper appreciation for its people.

Set at the lowest point of the Great Rift Valley, beside the extraordinary landscapes of Lake Natron and beneath the imposing presence of Ol Doinyo Lengai, Lake Natron Camp offers an experience that feels wonderfully far removed from the ordinary. The camp sits between the volcanic slopes of Lengai, the peaks of Mount Gelai, the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment and the shimmering lake beyond, creating an extraordinary sense of wilderness and space.

The camp’s accommodation has been thoughtfully designed around a low-impact philosophy, with nine spacious tented suites and a unique earth-integrated concept room. Each suite features a private veranda, comfortable king-size bed, quality linen, an en-suite bathroom and solar-powered lighting, while raised decking helps minimise the camp’s footprint. The result is a simple yet beautifully considered retreat that allows the surrounding landscape to remain the star.

At the heart of camp, the mess and dining area opens towards extraordinary 360-degree views. Look north towards Lake Natron and its vast flamingo colonies, south towards Ol Doinyo Lengai, or west towards the Great Rift Valley as the setting sun transforms the landscape. A natural spring-fed pool flows through the camp, offering a wonderfully refreshing place to relax, while evenings around the campfire reveal an extraordinary sky filled with stars.

Lake Natron Camp is particularly special for travellers who want adventure to be part of their stay. Walk to the lake at sunrise to witness flamingos, hike through the Ngare Sero gorge to waterfalls, discover ancient hominid footprints, meet the local Maasai community, enjoy dramatic sundowners or take on the challenge of climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai. The camp also forms a base for longer walking adventures through the Great Rift Valley and the historic landscapes between Natron and Olduvai. For Back to Eden Adventure guests, Lake Natron Camp is not simply a place to sleep — it is a gateway into one of Tanzania’s most remote, dramatic and unforgettable landscapes.

The elevated restaurant and bar provide a beautiful place to slow down and take in the scenery, with sweeping views towards Lake Natron and the volcanic landscape beyond. Freshly prepared meals make use of local produce, including vegetables from the property’s own garden, while the swimming pool offers a refreshing retreat after a day exploring the surrounding wilderness. Lake Natron

Lake Natron Tented Camp

Set among a peaceful grove of trees beside the shores of Lake Natron, Lake Natron Tented Camp offers an intimate escape into one of Tanzania’s most remote and hauntingly beautiful landscapes. Beneath the imposing presence of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the surrounding Rift Valley unfolds in dramatic shades of earth, sky and shimmering water. This is a place where the landscape itself becomes the experience, far from the crowds and rhythms of the traditional safari circuit.

The camp offers 16 spacious semi-luxury safari tents, each with a private veranda and en-suite bathroom. Comfortable beds, mosquito protection, charging facilities and soft candlelight create a simple but welcoming sanctuary after a day spent walking through the wilderness. Six additional Maasai banda rooms offer another distinctive way to experience the area, combining comfort with a stronger connection to the local character of Lake Natron.

At the centre of camp, a candlelit restaurant and fully stocked bar create a warm place to return to after a long day of exploration. Guests can enjoy a changing four-course menu, relax in the lounge overlooking the Maasai plains, or cool off in the natural swimming pool surrounded by shady gardens. As evening settles over the landscape, the campfire becomes the perfect place to pause beneath the vast African sky.

The real magic begins beyond the camp.
